I don’t know if I can put into words the experience I had last night at the Flaming Lips show. But, of course, I’ll try. Now, I’ve been told that a Flaming Lips live show is a spectacle, to say the least. And was it ever.
I think every last person at 10KLF was smushed into the space surrounding the Main Stage as The Flaming Lips emerged. The stage was circus-like, aglow with lights, a giant video screen, balloons, streamers shooting from cannons, and groups of what appeared to be life-sized teletubbies flanking the performers.
Wayne Coyne was enamored with the crowd and the setting. He noted that the temperate was perfect—not too hot, not too cold— and likened it to being in the womb together. The band, hailing from Oklahoma, must have felt close to home. One with the crowd, Coyne invited us to participate in a scream-along (not a sing-along) to the song “Free Radicals”. Later in the show, they treated the crowd to a song from the vault, “Mountain Side”.
I am happy to report that The Flaming Lips delivered with, yes, a cover song. Only the second of day 2 for me.
Flaming Lips Cover Song: The Song Remains the Same (Led Zeppelin)
Rating: Stars just won’t cut it for this one.
Coyne told the audience that when he heard this song as a child he envisioned that, when it was played, people would just take their clothes off and run around naked. So, he invited the crowd to do so. And many did. In fact, he had a crowd of naked women surrounding him on stage by song’s end.
Sorry, folks. No pictures of that.
What a way to end day 2.

My 3rd lips show, best one yet. The Light-up Gong was pretty cool.
