This is the most important part of recording.  Hear me once: You must know what you’re recording before you record it.  In other words, try to come up with an idea of what you want your recording to sound like prior to hitting your home studio. Of course this may change over time, but it’s very important to have a recording goal.

Another thing: Auto Tune is great, but don’t abuse it.  Record to the best of your ability prior to using technology to adjust your sound.  Don’t overdo the editing; it’s the music that counts.

The recording and editing process can take years to master, so don’t get frustrated.  When done correctly, it can make or break a song. And nowadays, a professional recording can pretty easily be accomplished at home.
