HOW TO GET A COLLEGE GIG

os_howto_c_052709

When you’re in a band, you know the blood, sweat and tears involved in stalking club owners and booking agents to confirm dates, searching high and low for cool opening acts, walking all over creation to put up flyers, loading gear in and out of  your van only to open that golden envelope at the end of the night to find out you made … 30 bucks?

Unless you’re an established act with a diehard following, club shows can be a financial crapshoot. Lucky for you, colleges and universities usually pay a set fee that can be substantially higher than what you’ll make at a clubeven with a packed house. Every college is different, but you can generally expect anywhere from $500 to upwards of $3,000 for a gig depending on how high your profile is. So how do you go about getting a show on campus? There’s no magical formula, but here are some DIY tips to get you started in the right direction.

  1. Contact the college radio station. Even if they’re not in charge of booking acts, they can probably direct you to the right person at the Office of Student Affairs, Campus Life or the like. We let Wikipedia do the legwork and found this handy list of college radio stations in markets all over the U.S. and beyond.
  2. Look at where similar artists are playing. While you’re out there in cyberspace, take a few minutes to check out other band’s tour schedules and see which colleges they are booking.
  3. Follow up, follow up, follow up. The ball is always in your court, so make sure you’re persistent. Get personal email addresses and phone numbers and stay in touch. Ask the college radio station to spin your music. Keep your contacts in the loop on album releases, big shows and any press you’ve garnered. Even the slightest success you’ve had will make you that much more attractive to the person booking the shows.

lubamasonWith the finale of this year’s season of Dancing with the Stars over, many of you will be looking for a summer dance fix. Look no further than the OurStage Latin Channel for a perfect mix of danceable tunes ranging from modern to traditional with a range of beats to satisfy both the fastest mambo and slowest, most sensual rumba routines. But before you get carried away on the dance floor, check out one of last month’s Top 10 winners, Luba Mason.

From Hollywood to Broadway, Luba has built up an impressive resume and her latest album, Krazy Love, highlights this artist’s true star potential. Her singing and acting career began with classical training in voice, piano and dance, which quickly led to performances in the Tony Award-winning The Will Roger’s Follies. Her Broadway debut was quickly followed by noted performances alongside such respected names as Matthew Broderick and Brooke Shields.

Krazy Love showcases the musical influences of Luba’s husband and Latin superstarRuben Blades with a fusion of smooth Brazilian melodies, flirtatious Latin vibes and a crisp pop undertone. It also features a band comprised of celebrated musicians that complement the album’s sound perfectly including well-known Brazilian musician Renato Neto (a pianist for the legendary musician, Prince) on piano & keyboards  and bassist Jimmy Haslip from the Yellowjackets.

DAYTROTTER: THE HORSE IS OUT OF THE BARN

Here’s the dirty truth of music scribes everywhere: none of us have a clue where to find the next big thing. While we spend a fair amount of time looking under rocks, we are by nature  lazy. Instead, we simply keep our trained ears attuned to what our trusted sources are listening to on their ipod or watching play in some dank basement club. Since we are judged by our ability to unearth noteworthy new artists, we guard this insider information closely.

You see, there is no true epicenter of the industry buzz machine.  No secret mount on high from which oracles herald the coming of each new indie darling. But,  if you were to hold a hot poker to a music critics eye and demand they name their trusted sources, they would begrudgingly cry out, “Daytrotter!”

daytrotter_circle160Yes, just off the Interstate in aptly named Rock Island, Ill., Sean Moeller openly runs this critic darling, “for those in the know” Website highlighting new music discovery for general consumption. While there are a glut of music-centered sites with ten times the amount of visitors, none speak as sweetly to true music geeks as Daytrotter. The premise is relatively simple: invite bands into the studio, ask them to record a few original songs and post the resulting sessions on the site. Yet Moeller succeeds where so many other more richly funded operations fail; in being authentic and unabashedly homespun.

With a small cast of web designers, music engineers and amazingly hip illustrators, Daytrotter is nothing more than a glorified pit stop for “van bands” headed West out of Chicago on the road to fame, fortune and endless Taco Bell. Yet, the hospitality and love for all things music is so genuine, artists end up leaving behind tracks drenched in raw splendor and inspiration.  Intimate sets by the Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Bonnie Prince Billy, and Blitzen Trapper are instant classics. However, the real beauty comes in discovering truly twisted downloads of The Walkmen reading scenes from a Sex & The City script with deadpan aplomb or re-introducing a jaded hack like me to the Cold War Kids after summarily dismissing them based solely on their single.

Moeller and Daytrotter shine a warm light on the overlooked. Like a cool  high school English tutor who corrects your grammar but doesn’t take credit for your term paper, Daytrotter schools you on the latest music but let you claim bragging rights when playing your hot new mix tape. Even though exposing this insider secret feels like a surfer broadcasting the secret spot or a magician showing the audience the sleight of hand, the truth sets you free. And, really, the world needs more people who care about discovering new music.

While you are exploring all that Daytrotter has to offer, check out some past OurStage artists who have been featured on the site:

LEAKS AREN’T JUST FOR THE MAJORS

In the early days of the music industry, a leak was as simple as a radio DJ copying an advance release and giving it to a friend. Today within minutes of someone sharing an album online, it’s available to anyone with an internet connection (and sufficient knowledge of where to obtain these files). It has become a daily habit of publications such as Digital Music News to announce leaks and add exposure to the growing leak issues in the industry. These recent leaks include hot shots such as Green Day, Eminem, Wilco and Franz Ferdinand.

tori

Recently there has been a new front to this leak battle; Independent artists are starting to see the same issues as their Major label counterparts. One such example: Tori Amos’ latest album leaked on May 11th, it was due to hit stores only 8 days later.

Luckily, artists are fighting back with other promotions to promote buying their album. Those who pre-ordered Tori’s album on iTunes received a password to order tickets for her summer tour before the general public. The album also came with a DVD video; items like this are not usually included in prerelease leaks giving fans a reason to pick up the album. Artists like Tori also have another thing going for them: a loyal fan base who may download a leak but will still purchase the album for the extras and in support of the artist.

The industry is changing.  The classic music industry tactics are futile.  Labels must embrace change and adjust tactics for success as independent artists have, or they will soon fall to dust.
