THE SOUND OF MAGIC

Here We Go Magic is a talented troupe of musical alchemists weaving a delightful web of sounds that please the ear and challenge the mind. To grasp the real magic behind the music, you must first understand their sorcerer, Luke Temple. As Jon Pareles of the New York Times puts it, “Mr. Temple isn’t part of any particular schoolnot even that all-purpose new songwriters’ catchall, freak-folkand his private world is fascinating.”

Luke’s humble beginnings of pulling swords from stones began in 2004 as he plucked his guitar in small clubs around New York City. You may recognize his track “Saturday People” from Fall 2007 when it was a strong contender on OurStage. Back then, we were able to catch up with Luke at the CMJ Music Marathon and he wowed us with his captivating sleight of hand:

"What helps with inspiration is being uncomfortable and working with different mediums that your not as comfortable or familiar with," Luke said in the above interview. "I can get really familiar on the guitar and I could write a million sad country ballads. That's my comfort spot; I like to go back there every now and then, but I try to keep myself on my toes."

Luke must have been on his very tippy toes while working on his latest project because he takes us far, far away from his comfort zones. Listening to the tracks from the self-titled debut from Here We Go Magic, you will be hard pressed to find a single thread from a country ballad. Instead as Daytrotter puts it, “It has a feel of the cremated ashes of an old body strewn about the breezes already, dancing over grass blades and ramming into trees, disintegrating into lakes along the way, but generally still traveling as long as there’s room to travela contrast to what the words are actually asking, pleading for.”

Check out Here We Go Magic now on OurStage and if you’re in the New York area go see them live on July 3rd at South Street Seaport.

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS WITH CAFE TACUBA LIVE AT NYC’S HAMMERSTEIN BALLROOM

Sunday night I witnessed one of only three US stops on Café Tacuba’s 20:20 Tour. This pivotal Mexican band has been together for twenty years and is celebrating this milestone by playing shows in twenty cities all over North and South America as well as Europe. When I found out they weren’t coming to Boston, I bought a bus ticket to New York City and reserved my room in the closest hostel without missing a beat. It would be my third time seeing the band and the show turned out to be worth way more than what the trip cost. Manhattan was pulsating from start to finish with the Hammerstein Ballroom as its heart.

It also happens to have my lucky number on the cover.

I first fell in love with Café Tacuba’s unique sound in 2003 when their album Cuatro Caminos came out. I was bored with the music I found in Newbury Comics‘ negligible Latin section. (Love the store guys, but Latin music isn’t all Shakira and Maná!) After reading the sticker on the front of the CD (a quote from some music review hailing Cuatro Caminos as “The Latin Kid A“), I bought the album. It quickly became one of few CDs I consistently enjoy listening to from start to finish. Unfortunately for me, the band almost never played shows further north than Texas and California since the bulk of their fan base was, logically, Mexican. I assumed I would never see them live… until Sino came out in 2007, and they began to tour once again. I didn’t just get to see them live: I got to see them twice in as many years.

50 STATES IN 50 WEEKS… WEEK 3: MASSACHUSETTS

osblog_50states_ma1

As a lifelong Masshole, it gives me great pleasure to present my home state…

Massachusetts

The Bay State

Home of: The Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots, Emily Dickinson, Paul Revere, Dr. Seuss, Aerosmith, Dropkick Murphys, Passion Pit, The Cars, The Modern Lovers,  The Dresden Dolls

Fun Facts: State bird; chickadee, state song; “All Hail Massachusetts,” state dessert; Boston cream pie

The Venues: Boston rockers head to The Middle East in Cambridge, MA. The Downstairs features national touring acts like Ra Ra Riot, The Walkmen and Cursive while smaller touring acts and local up-and-comers share the Upstairs stage. Over in Allston, the former sports bar know as Great Scott has a reputation for booking the next big thing before they become “the next big thing.” The Palladium in Worcester, MA is the place for local and national punk, metal and hardcore bands.  Western MA indie rock fans get their fix at Pearl Street Nightclub in the bohemian college town of Northampton, home of the Young@Heart Chorus and famous New Yorkers Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth. Massachusetts also has a strong DIY scene, with all ages shows being booked in basements, churches and VFW halls around the state.

The Music:

vegnypqmajej-320x240Gentlemen Hall -  Funky and extremely danceable, Gentlemen Hall sound like an edgy Maroon 5. Their song “Stun Gun“, previously featured in the OurStage Memorial Day BBQ playlist blog, is sure to get feet tapping and booties shaking. Several Boston bands play this kind of music, but no one does it better than Gentlemen Hall.

ybmpkslrybbl-520x520Domino Saints -Domino Saints blend Puerto Rican bomba and plena with reggaeton rhythms and socially conscious lyrics sung in both English and Spanish. “Buenos Dias San Juan” is a killer summer dance track will make any city feel like a tropical island. If you dig Domino Saints multicultural beat, check out Allston afro-beat warriors The Macrotones.

cpcfbplugqvc-320x240Air Traffic Controller -Air Traffic Controller’s smart pop songs tell everyday stories about life and love without sounding stale: Their song “Can’t Let Go” might be the sweetest song ever written about road rage. The band takes it’s name from frontman Dave Munro, who served in the US Navy as— you guessed it—an air traffic controller. The band’s debut album The One was produced by Boston’s former music-scene-fixture-turned-in-demand-LA-songwriter Bleu.

rylwmlwuudgy-520x520Ferris Wheel – Ferris Wheel has only been together for a year, but their elegant indie pop sounds just as polished as bands who have been playing for 3 times as long. “Paper Cranes” combines cello, guitar, drums, trumpet, bass and boy/girl vocals to form a breezy pop tune reminiscent of Fleet Foxes or Broken Social Scene.

Check out these acts and other great Massachusetts artists in the playlist below!

MESSIN’ WITH TEXAS

kashan

The road to stardom can be bumpy at times. There can be financial difficulties, relationship strains … or a run-in with the law in Fort Worth, Texas that leaves you tased and incarcerated.

So goes the story of Kashan, an ambitious R&B balladeer from Tennessee. Despite these inauspicious beginnings, Kashan survived the tasing and made it out of Texas with his dreams intact. Now safely nestled in Brooklyn, the singer is putting his nose to the grindstone to begin work on his debut CD—with the help of his musical cohorts, the SimplySoul Band. Here’s what you can look forward too: stripped-down love songs, mellow R&B grooves, funky guitar lines lapping at syncopated drum beats, chimes, finger snaps and Kashan’s capable croon. Expect big things from this determined artist … but maybe not a show in Texas any time soon.

DOWNLOAD OF THE WEEK: FUGITIVE SOULS

Brooklyn’s Fugitive Souls are here to serenade you with the dark, romantic melodies on this week’s free download, “Hang On”, off their debut EP, Strangers.   Singer, Mark Allen, formerly of the The Shapes, delivers an intimate, yet powerful performance akin to Muse’s Matt Bellamy. Beautiful piano chords punctuate Allen’s vocals while disco rhythms beat across the drummer’s hi-hat. Fans of The Cure and Interpol will feel right at home with this band’s approach to melodramtic, yet danceable love songs . If you happen to be in New York City on July 25th you can try catching the band live at the The Studio at Webster Hall while supporting our friends at Paste Magazine. Fugitive Souls along with Mixel Pixel, Anthem In, and a DJ set from Brazilian Girls‘ Didi are sure to make for an excellant line up at the upcomming Paste Magazine Benefit Concert.
