FINE TUNINGS: SPARHUSEN — FAUX SWEDISH MEATBALLS

Sparhusen

OSBlog02_FineTunings_SparhusenIlleana Douglas is well known as a serious indie actress in dramatic films such as Grace of my Heart, Cape Fear and To Die For. But her roots are firmly planted in comedy—she even used to perform stand-up. Her latest project, the web-based series called Sparhusen, launched on My Damn Channel on October 8th. The off-beat mock-u-mentary puts Douglas squarely in touch with the hilarious and musical sides of her personality. She also manages to coax a silly performance out of Keanu Reeves.

If you loved Spinal Tap or The Rutles, you’ll love Sparhusen. The series attempts to solve many mysteries surrounding the demise of Sparhusen, the fictitious “Almost Great Band of Sweden,” after two band members disappear following a 1974 plane crash. A blonde-tressed Illeana plays Beirget Kattson, the only surviving band member of the trio. Beirget is pregnant at the time of the crash and either of Beirget’s band mates, Olf Nystrom or Gert Foresberg, could be the father. Or perhaps the baby daddy is Vorste Feirron, (Keanu Reeves) the band’s producer, famous for inventing the “Whale of Sound.” Another hilarious Sparhusen colleague is band manager Bjorn Epstein, “one of three Jews here in Sweden.”

Like Illeana’s other web-based show, Easy To Assemble, Sparhusen boasts an all-star cast, improve galore and IKEA-inspired Swedish songs (the mega-store is the sponsor) like “Apples and Fish,” “Midnight at the Fjord,” and “Ice Fishing.” The multi-talented actress sings and plays ukulele on the series as well.

To quote Olf Nystrom, “You can’t have the blues if you’re wearing snow shoes.”

Episode #2 airs on October 22nd. Check it out on mydamnchannel.com.
