The Melophobic: Food For Thought

Musicians need to eat.  Simple right? I’ve begun to notice a trend involving food here on OurStage.  Among many ridiculous things, I have not only spotted food-inspired album art, but also heard songs about food as well.  Search “food” on OurStage and you’ll find a wide array of items.  Included in this list are videos of students talking about heath affects of eating correctly from an old competition.  You can even spot a hypnotic music video by Trystian rapping about everything from Doritos to tomatoes.

So what sent me over the edge and made made go all melphobic over this topic of food? Of course it had to be a supremely entertaining track like “Spaghetti Reggae” (listen in the player below) by Teddy Kalanda Harrison. In my mind, anything can go with spaghetti but this song takes it to a new level.

Let’s justify this food mentality the same way we justified the boy bands from the 90s. About 96% of the boy band songs were about one thing: love.  Their songs were catchy, though many sounded the same, but they were huge for a few years.  These musicians were well fed and had little to worry about it life, with all their money and good looks, except love.  So maybe these food-oriented musicians have the opposite problem, they have love, yet need food?

So remember artists, before you empty your bank account to buy another round of beers, you yourself may be subject to this growing trend of food-related songs.  Personally, I’ll listen to a song about eggs, chicken, or love. Doesn’t matter me, but to a record executive… it may.
