Superlatones: The Heartthrob

posted in: FeaturesPop

With January coming to an end and Valentine’s day just around the corner, it is no wonder that we’ve found our music tastes taking a turn for the romantic. Soft ballads and sweet voices take center stage, and no one knows how to send the ladies hearts’ a-flutter better than the men making the music. Therefore, ladies, please enjoy this installment of Superlatones, featuring two of the most alluring voices on today’s radio. Fellows, take note.

The Dynamic Duo:

Matt Nathanson and Derren Raser

Singer-songwriter Matt Nathanson is probably most well known for his hit single Come On Get Higher, which went platinum at over 1.8 million copies sold to date. The thirty-eight year old made his first release in 1993, but only with the album Some Mad Hope (released in 2007) did he finally gain attention for his music. Currently, Nathanson is out on tour with Kelly Clarkson, and despite his sentimental lyrics and broken-hearted croon, he is also known for his good humor and energetic performances, making him appealing to audiences across the board.

As one of OurStage’s very own, Derren Raser has already claimed a special place in our hearts, but what seals the deal for this Kansas city native are his crisp vocals and effortless lyrics. He has shared the stage with such names as HANSONJohn Mayer and Greg Laswell, and recently won the Hollywood Music Award for Best Male Vocals. With his dynamic guitar accompaniment and boyish good looks, Raser is sure to soften the hearts of many a lovestruck girl, just as his clean, jazz-inspired pop style will win him even more fans down the line.

So here are two men, both singing about love, both pouring their emotions out to us through the lilt of their melodies and the thrum of their guitar. The combination seems so obvious, it’s almost boring. What brings them to attention, however, is the stark contrast between both voices. While Nathanson works the raspy vocals and bad-boy image, Raser’s voice is just as innocent as his looks, and it is this difference that would make a project between these two most interesting. To hear these voices interchange or even combine in a harmony would do more than just break monotony”it would be the winning factor of this collaboration.
