Carly Rae Jepsen, Adam Young Sued Over Alleged “Good Time” Theft

posted in: Music NewsPopRock

In today’s world of radio ready music, there’s very little originality hitting the waves. Musicians are constantly under fire for borrowing or outright stealing melodies, and for the most part it goes unnoticed or unmentioned. However, in a recent lawsuit issued by singer/songwriter Allyson Nichole Burnett, it looks like Carly Rae Jepsen and Owl City‘s Adam Young will have some explaining to do to the courts for their recent summer hit, Good Time. Check out more details after the jump.

Burnett claims copyright infringement for her song “Ah, It’s A Love Song” on the terms that Good Time stole a unique vocal motif” which is repeated throughout the song and “has a catchy pop vibe that both draws people in and sticks in people’s heads.

The complaint goes on to say:

“Defendants’ extensive access to ‘Love Song’ is sufficient to trigger the ‘inverse ration rule,’ whereby a reduced standard of proof of substantial similarity is required when a high degree of access is shown. However, the substantial similarity between the Original Motif and the Copied Motif… is striking under any standard of proof.”
