I Can See Mountains Inch Closer To Global Takeover With "I Play The Fox"

There must be something in the water in upstate New York because the last few years have seen dozens of great bands rise from its various scenes, including I Can See Mountains.

If you could step into a time machine and jump back a decade or more, you’d find alternative rock/punk to be a completely differently world than it is today. There were just as many, if not more bands then, but no one had the kind of unlimited access to social networks and recording technology that people do today. If you wanted a solid EP you had to pay for it, and even if you managed to do that there was no guarantee any blogger, critic, label, or casual listener would give it the time of day. Bands had to fight tooth and nail for listeners, and that process of personally trying to connect with thousands would (hopefully) forge relationships that eventually turned into band revenue. Things are different now, of course, but the bands who find flash in the pan success with early material rarely prove to have the heart or talent needed to endure a career in music. If a band wants to make it they still need those connections with listeners to survive, and in an age where everyone is connect that is harder than ever to achieve. I Can See Mountains have mastered this aspect of marketing however, and it’s clearer than ever that they have bright things ahead of them with “I Play The Fox.”

On their debut EP Hope You Never Get It, I Can See Mountains burst from their scene with a handful of songs about growing up, realizing who you are, and dealing with all the bullshit in between. It was an honest, driving record built on years of influence from various punk and rock subgenres, and it helped the band find attention on a national level. Panic Records scooped them up shortly thereafter, and the band has since been in the studio working on a proper full length. Earlier this year we learned that album would be called Life On A House Boat, and just last week the lead single arrived online. “I Play The Fox” picks up from the closing moments of Hope You Never Get It and again engages fans with lyrical tales woven through personal trials and tribulations. It’s the kind of song that doesn’t just relate to you, but helps you relate to the band. You don’t feel like a fan when “I Play The Fox” comes on, but rather like a part of the conversation. It’s as if the band is hanging out with you for the first time in months and excitedly wants to catch you up on everything that has been going on while remembering the good times shared. You see, those connections I mentioned earlier have helped I Can See Mountains grow so close with fans that it feels like a family, and it’s the strength of that connection that makes “I Play The Fox” a success.

It’s still too early to call, but having heard “I Play The Fox” it seems impossible to think that Life On A Houseboat will be anything short of sensational. I Can See Mountains have done everything right in their career thus far, and with songs as powerful as this one it’s only a matter of time before the world catches on.
