After raising well over $100,000 on Kickstarter earlier this year, New York musician Kevin Devine has debuted the first song off his upcoming crowdfunded release.

If you haven’t heard the tale of Bradley Manning yet, you’re either under a rock or actively avoiding national news. Manning is the United States Army private arrested in May 2010, accused of passing classified material to the website WikiLeaks. The case has created a great deal of controversy, with passionate detractors and supporters alike. Manning’s trial has been all over the papers this summer, and now Kevin Devine has written a song with him in mind. You can stream “Private First Class” over at Absolutepunk.

Nearly eight LPs into his career, Kevin Devine shows no signs of slowing anytime soon. In fact, we dare say “Private First Class” is his best song in a long time. The fury of his early work is there, just below the perspective he’s gained as an adult, and the combination of those two elements makes for undeniable music chemistry.
