Miley Cyrus Stirs Controversy Once More With "Wrecking Ball"

Before we get to the video in this post, I want to challenge you. It goes without saying that the antics of the singer at the center of this post has garnered more attention than her music in recent weeks. This clip will likely continue that trend, so instead of giving in to controversy try listening to the song without actually watching the video. Click to another tab on your browser, minimize, whatever you need to do. Give this song a real chance to hit you because it deserves it, and it’s unfortunate that the celebrity antics of the person behind it could overshadow its impact.

Miley Cyrus is making headlines again this morning with the release of the video for her latest Bangerz single, “Wrecking Ball.”

Having pranced around in her underwear for “We Can’t Stop” before teaching America how white girls twerk at the Video Music Awards, it should come as no surprise Cyrus is once again courting controversy with her latest video. Opening on a closeup shot of the singer with a single tear on her cheek, the Terry Richardson-directed video soon cuts to a completely nude Cyrus riding an actual wrecking ball around a small set while singing about heartache. That is not a joke or an exaggeration. You can view the video below.

People are going to talk about the visuals accompanying “Wrecking Ball,” but the real story is the song itself. Backed by a beautifully evocative production, Cyrus recounts the end of a relationship with metaphor and melody. It’s a big leap from what we heard on “We Can’t Stop,” even if the video says otherwise, and could be a major success for the starlet – and likely will, due to her recent notoriety. It finds a balance between ballad and club, which few have pulled off before, but only time will tell if the public is willing to give Miley’s emotional side an honest listen.

Bangerz hits stores October 8. Expect more material to surface soon.
