THE TOP 5 BANDS STUCK IN THE TOP 10

Every once and a while, great artists on OurStage slip through the cracks and don’t get proper recognition. They do well but for some reason that winning channel spot continues to elude them. Maybe they just have bad luck, or maybe their competition is just too tough, but either way let’s take this moment to commemorate some of our best artists who have not been properly celebrated with a channel win. This will be my last blog post before I move on from OurStage, so I wanted to make sure that I gave some of my favorite OurStage musicians their just deserts before I moved on.

In this post:
White Light Riot (Rock)
Heather Evans (Pop/Rock)
American Babies (Folk/Rock)
Derek Adams (R&B/Hip-Hop)
Sean Bell (Hip-Hop)

Breaking Out With Amy Kuney

It would be easy to say Amy Kuney is just another female singer/songwriter in a sea of them recieving national attention recently, but there’s more to her than that. She travelled in Central America as a teenager, where she encountered experiences beyond what most people ever see- including being kidnapped by rebels while traveling through Guatemala. Through her harrowing adventures, she has been giving plenty of material to help fuel her songwriting career. Her inspiration fueled by incredible experiences in life captured the attention of a producer in Los Angeles, and things have been rising ever since.

Kuney won the March Grand Prize on OurStage for her song “Thank You For Last Night”, and has been garnering national attention for her other songs as well, including placement on TV shows One Tree Hill and Passions. She also had the luck to be cast in a one-episode role on Gilmore Girls. Kuney is also about to embark on a national tour with Kate Voegele in support of Amy’s debut solo album, Bird’s Eye View.

You can check out Amy’s website, or preview her album on iTunes as well.w

Staff Picks: Essential College Rock…

…And, who they influenced!

My first installment of Staff Picks! I finally get my chance to share my list of the three college rock bands that I think we owe the most thanks to. I’d had this list on my desk for weeks before our editor Jessica finally let me publish it – apparently all I had to do was “ask”.

College rock is one of the most important forces driving the evolution of music forward. Where would we be without the bands that met in the basements of dirty dorms to howl and screech instead of writing papers? That is not a world I want to live in, I can tell you that.

they might be giants

3) They Might Be Giants.

Sure they’re nerdy. Of course you don’t hear an accordion used in rock music often. But when it’s done well, people listen. They Might Be Giants came from humble beginnings, including recording some of their first songs on an answering machine as the greeting in order to spread the message about their songs. Their unique sound took them from gigs in front of an answering machine to one of the best-recognized rock bands of our time.

REM

2) R.E.M.

Allmusicguide said it best when they wrote, “R.E.M. mark the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock.” No other single band so clearly straddled the gap of turning a fringe movement of complicated vocals and carefully laid out guitar work. Everyone remembers Automatic For The People as one of the immortal albums.

the pixies

1)Pixies.
While they weren’t a massive commercial success, the Pixies turned out to be one of the most important bands to sparking the grunge and alt rock revolution of the early 1990’s. Even Kurt Cobain of Nirvana attributed much of his own success and inspiration to listening the Pixies. In a 1994 interview, Cobain said:

“When I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected with that band so heavily I should have been in that band – or at least in a Pixies cover band. We used their sense of dynamics, being soft and quiet and then loud and hard.”

These bands, in addition to shaping the future of modern rock music, have played a heavy hand in shaping alt rock on OurStage as well. Check out some of the below artists for a sample – they the cream of our crop, all with powerful influences from some of the bands mentioned above.

APRIL FOOLS BANDS: THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME

April Fools Day is just around the corner, which means this is a great time to pay dues to the bands who sometimes fool us into thinking they are another. It’s no slight on their abilities – but sometimes a certain singer or melody can conjure images and thoughts of other bands, past concerts, or other fun memories. These four acts have definitely paid their dues to their predecessors or influences. Why four? Because it’s April- celebrate the spring!

Keep reading on for the list of bands that may fool you…

Heather Evans’ battle scars are healing

Heather Evans For My Generation Battle Scars

Rising singer/songwriter Heather Evans is no stranger to OurStage. After she joined OurStage in 2008 at the age of 21, her soulful and strong voice was recognized immediately by fans on OurStage. She fought for quite a while though, before she took a Top 10 spot in February’s Indie Rock rankings. An avid singer who’s mature sound carries her experiences well, Heather recorded her first full album when she was just fifteen. That album, “Impatient Heart” has since sold many thousands of copies.

Incorporating her humble and honest nature, Heather often sings of her strong personal faith. “Battle Scars”, which finished 2nd in Indie Rock in February on OurStage, carries a particular message of staying true to yourself.

“Ride on, you soldier of the Lord … Battle scars will heal, they will heal”

Hailing from central Ohio, Heather doesn’t just sing about her own origins and ordeals. She is also active in charities and benefits to help end human trafficking and sex trafficking in Asia and Africa. You can read more about the organizations she works with, Shared Hope International and Hear The Cry.

Check out more information about Heather Evans on her profile, or check out her album on iTunes.
