What Indie Musicians Want From the Next President

EMBED THIS VIDEO

At this point, we know how Obama and McCain plan to support the middle class, the troops, and the elderly.  But what about the growing constituency of indie musicians?

We caught up with dozens of indie bands at this year’s CMJ Music Marathon in New York City and posed the question:  What do you want the next president to do for indie musicians?

Hilarity and surprisingly reasoned responses ensue. Enjoy the video!

And in the comment section, let me know what you want the next president to do for indie music fans!

Daily Dose: Halloween Playlist Edition

Happy Halloween everyone! With all the ghouls and ghosts afoot today we thought it would be appropriate to assemble a little (un)holiday inspired playlist. First up, is the video above, “A Day In The Life” from Love In October (how appropriate…) brings us killer costumes and an attempted killer…

Moving onto the playlist…

1.) The Ascetic Junkies, with a poppy take on everyones’ favorite bloodsucker, “Dracula”.

2.) The Novel Ideas, wonder what it would be like to be another’s lost soul in, “I’ll Be Your Ghost”

3.) If you had a “Late Night Halloween Beach Party” which demons and denizens would show up?

4.) “Hell’s October” is a foreboding title that captures the aura of foreboding surrounding Halloween.

5.) “Zombies” on Halloween aren’t as scary as the zombies always around us.

6.) A comical take on Hallows Eve, Mark Kaufman brings us a “Dead Sexy” tune about an “undying love…”

Cheeseburger Performs at CMJ 2008

If Robert Pollard and Peter Griffin started a band together, it would probably sound something like Cheeseburger.  Intrigued by their band name, I checked these guys out last night and was blown away.  Kudos go to my cameraman, Matt, who took a shot to the face from leadsinger Joe Bradley while shooting.

OurStage fans may be reminded of The Matt Truman Ego Trip, who have been producing over-the-top, tongue-in-cheek songs about cocaine and Rock & Roll for years.  Me?  I’d like to see the two bands tour together.

Memphis Pencils Interview at CMJ 2008

To kick things off at the CMJ Music Marathon 2008, I caught up with my favorite Arkansas band, Memphis Pencils.  Ok, so they’re the only band I know from Arkansas, but trust me, they’re really good. Inspired by Renaissance choral music, Brian Wilson, and Grizzly Bear, these guys craft quirky, catchy songs with a homemade feel.  If you haven’t heard their song “Un Dandy Dia,” do yourself a favor and give it a listen.  And while your at it, join their fanclub by visiting their OurStage profile.

Stay tuned for their live performance video from CMJ coming Saturday…
