Download of the Week: Apple Trees and Tangerines

OSBlog02_MTVNeedleHay_ApplesTangerines_01In November OurStage invited Jax Anderson of the brother-sister indie pop duo Apple Trees, and Tangerines to be a guest writer in our “Liner Notes” column. Jax divulged the story behind their track “Orange” which was written about her and her brother Seth’s struggle dealing with a friend’s vices. Since that post, Jax and Seth have been getting quite a few plays on OurStage while catching some critical attention. With quirky songwriting that easily gets stuck in your head, it’s no wonder MTV Music picked Apples Trees, and Tangerines as this week’s “Needle in the Haystack” featured artist. While originally from Detroit, Jax and Seth now live in different states and collaborate on their music via email. This week’s free download “Violet” kicks off with a nod to Seth’s love of Western movies and quickly explodes into a nu-disco track with Jax throwing down some serious Debbie Harry attitude. Keep your eye out for more on Apple Trees, and Tangerines this week on MTV Music and OurStage.

With sonic nods to Modest Mouse and Pavement, the track has become a fan favorite for judges in the Indie Rock Channel. On this week’s Liner Notes, Simon reveals his macabre muse behind “The Brink”.
