10KLF Comes to an End

What a long, strange trip it’s been. As I leave the quaint town of Detroit Lakes, MN (population 7400), I can’t help but wonder how life will resume for the thousands of people who will depart the Soo Pass Rand tomorrow morning. Young children, teenagers, twenty-somethings, thirty-somethings, parents, grandparents… an eclectic group of folks gathered here this weekend with what seemed to be a common purpose. They coexisted peacefully, simply, and happily. Tomorrow, they will return to the world at large—a place that seemed to cease to exist from inside our little bubble. They will resume their roles as caregivers, employees, students…people with responsibilities. Difficult as that might be, at least we’ve all had these few days to escape from the norm and enjoy the music.

10KLF @ Night

As I’ve mentioned, (it’s my opinion that) some of the best experiences at a festival can happen outside the music. I do love festivals at night. The grounds magically transform into a vibrant, mythical scene. Effervescent colors and glowing lights illuminate the night as costumed performers twirl and flutter about. It is theatrical, Shakespearean, dream-like.

If you’re able to discern from the pictures below, a seemingly spontaneous fire-dancing tribe erupted during Phil’s intermission. Tried though I did, I was unable to capture the fire-breathing woman in a snapshot.

P.S. I know what you’re thinking after these last 2 posts and no, I’m not on drugs. It’s just that beautiful here tonight.

OurStage @ 10KLF: Phil Lesh

To close out the main stage on this, the final night of 10KLF, Phil Lesh & Friends played a 2 ½+ hour set. Their soothing grooves filled the air just as the sun was setting over the ranch, and an iridescent glow radiated from the stage.

Nod to a cover band

I couldn’t help but note that a cover band performed today on the Barn stage: Phix. According to 10KLF, they “capture the sound and spirit of Phish’s music with astonishing accuracy.”

It just wouldn’t be fair to rate Phix, a band dedicated to performing another band’s music, to any other covers I’ve heard this weekend. But nonetheless, I had to acknowledge them and say their performance was phenomenal.

OurStage @ 10KLF: Sovereign Sect

So maybe I spoke too soon. Sovereign Sect’s crowd rivaled Roster McCabe’s. They packed the Saloon. As the last OurStage band to perform at this year’s 10KLF, they certainly represented us well
