With fall officially here, we decided to take a different approach with today’s Daily Dose. Here’s a look back at the best OurStage moments of Summer 2008:

Daily Download: Gold Standard

My high school days we’re filled with ska, jazz, and funk/jam bands, needless to say, brass sections please me immensely. Today we bring you 7-piece juggernaut, Gold Standard, from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Winners of a performance spot at 10K Lakes Festival this summer, they rocked the Soo Pass Ranch back in July. These guys bring the jam band goodness, but (thank god), leave the generic noodling behind, blending funk and prog-rock elements into a seriously dance-able union. I no longer wear hemp necklaces or have 10 inches of hair, so today we bring you Haircut by indestructible (seriously, click that link…), Gold Standard.

OurStage @ 10KLF: Teddy Presberg

Teddy Presberg Cover Song: Night Court Theme Song
Rating: * * * (it’s a TV theme song! They get points for creativity)

Yes, I’m serious. Teddy Presberg actually played the theme to Night Court. I thought they’d just play a few bars as an intro to something else. But no, the band actually played what seemed to be a full length version of it (if there is such a thing). At first, I couldn’t place the tune so I turned to the couple standing next to me—the woman was clapping along excitedly—for help. We all had a good laugh and then we acknowledged that for all we knew that theme song may, in fact, have been derived from some old jazz song (or something to that effect). Doubtful, but we did have to throw that out there.

Friends, I’m disappointed to report this was the ONLY cover song of the day by an OurStage band. I’ll cross my fingers and think happy, positive thoughts that tomorrow will be more satisfying for this cover-lover. Until then, I have this.

OurStage @ 10KLF: Dead Larry

A beautiful thing happened during Dead Larry’s set: Someone in the crowd yelled out, during a semi-quiet moment between songs: “Who are you? Where are you from?” Repeatedly. Until she got an answer.

The beauty in this? This fan had found a new band she loved. Thanks to OurStage.

After all, that’s what we’re all about: new music discovery.

After I let this moment sink in, I listened as Mark, the lead singer and rhythm guitarist, shared with the crowd the story of how the band got it’s name. “A guy… died. His name was Larry.” Somehow, the band got into Larry’s house, drank his liquor and stole his clothes. Mark claims he was wearing the clothes on stage today. I believe it.
