Every good band begins with an interesting back-story, and for Buckeye Knoll, it all starts with Doug Streblow. The young songwriter took a “sabbatical from life” in the woods of California”what resulted was a book of hand-crafted songs that would form the foundation for the California-based trio. The group consists of two guitarists and a bass player, so they doubtless go through a lot of strings. Lucky for them, we’ve got that covered.
OurStage and Ernie Ball are happy to do our part for Buckeye Knoll by supplying them with a year’s supply of guitar and bass strings. For this, they can thank you, the fans, who put them in the Top 10 of our Indie Pop Channel for April 2011. Congratulations to Buckeye Knoll for winning the April Ernie Ball Indie Pop Grand Prize, may you rock them in good health.

By entering the “Shout it Out With HANSON” Competition on OurStage, 23 winning acts from around the country have already had the opportunity to open for the pop trio. Winning artists from the June John Mayer “Side Stage Warfare” Competition recently rocked out arena-sized crowds at venues in Scranton, Boston, Cleveland and Indianapolis. In July, we offered artists the chance at nabbing a side-stage slot on John Mayer’s “Battle Studies” tour in Phoenix, Atlanta, Houston and West Palm Beach. Over 1,000 artists submitted their music in July for a shot at the stage and the battling was fierce throughout the month.
The dust has settled since then, and now 4 acts are on their way to playing in front of thousands of screaming fans. Hand-picked from the Top 20 of each channel by John Mayer and his team, these artists have won not only a chance to play on the summer “Battle Studies” tour, but also free tickets to the show so their friends and family can be there to cheer them on. Every month, Ernie Ball selects one artist from one OurStage music channel to be the recipient of a years supply of free strings. In July, they focused on the artists in the Singer Songwriter (Male) Channel. Now that the judging is over and the ranks are in, Ernie Ball has chosen Andrew Varner as the winner of 52 sets of guitar strings and 12 sets of bass strings. Andrew won’t have to fret about buying strings for his axe for an entire year! Just think of how many open-mic nights and clubs one could play with all those strings. Stay tuned to the OurStage blog to find out the selected channel for August.

In June, OurStage partnered with Radio One Inc. and media mogul Andre Harrell to find the next big thing in R&B/Soul music with the Andre Harrell Superstar Soul Search Competition. Artists had the opportunity to enter their music in regional channels as well as one national channel for a shot at auditioning in front of Andre Harrell himself. In July, these auditions were held in cities across the country to narrow it down to the final few. Ten artists were then chosen to compete at the finals, which were held in Atlanta this past weekend. All 10 artists performed in front of Andre Harrell and a panel of celebrity judges including Keith Sweat, Ann Nesby, DJ Eddie F and Dwight Eubanks.
After an “exciting and explosive” final competition, Louisiana native Mr. Ayers wowed the audience and judges alike and was chosen as the winner.
