NOW PLAYING: KB@0S

osfanplaylists_blog_02OurStage is launching a new feature that shares playlists created by both Fans and Artists on the site. “Now Playing” will feature playlists as well as information about the person responsible for the mix. OurStage Community Leader KB took the first crack in the DJ booth. Check out the haunting group of harmony-filled songs by some of her favorite OurStage artists.

About Me: I’ve worked in the music industry for 10+ years. I appreciate many genres of music but I’m particularly drawn to the softer sounds within indie rock as well as  loud, old school rock n’ roll. Mostly I just love music and I find it exciting when I discover new talent. It’s rewarding to see and hear potential, and to help emerging artists find their audience. Hopefully the people reading this blog will listen to my playlist and become supporters of the talented artists featured.

Favorite Artists: So many favorites! Here’s a small sampling that stay in heavy rotation… Death Cab For Cutie, Silversun Pickups, PJ Harvey, State Radio, The Gossip, The Slip.

Favorite OurStage Artists: Not only do I enjoy the following artists music but I’ve seen them live and they are even better in person: Kate Tucker & The Sons of Sweden, Chris Pureka, Clarias, Big Bang TV.

If I were a rockstar for a day I’d be: PJ Harvey

Because… : She is one fierce badass. The woman is a talented vocalist, killer guitarist, prolific and influential songwriter, trendsetter and dynamic showman. PJ Harvey is a master of extremes within Rockboth a soft spoken muse and heart-wrenched lioness. Would love to walk in Paula Jean’s high heels for a day.

HOW TO PUT TOGETHER A KNOCKOUT EPK

os_howto_060309_cIn the music industry, artists don’t usually get a second chance to make a first impressions. Record labels, talent buyers, publicists and critics are inundated with inquiries from bands every day so you better bring your A-game if you want to stand out. This is where the EPK (Electronic Press Kit) comes in to play.

What is an electronic press kit? Think of it as your sales presentation, your two-minute elevator speech. Basically, the kit should introduce yourself and your music in an engaging, concise way while also piquing the intended audience’s interest so they want to learn more about you as an artist. By combining video, audio and photography, you can create a high-impact impression of who you are and what your music is all about.  Click through to see what Big Bang TVBreaking Laces and Kate Tucker & The Sons of Sweden all have in common and get expert advice on everything you need to build your own knockout EPK:

Best of Rock 2008

To ring in the new year, we here at OurStage thought it would be a good idea to step back and reflect on some great new artists that emerged on the scene in 2008 and are likely to be the ones to watch in 2009. This is our list of favorite rockers:

www.ourstage.com

Adam Ezra Group
With the soulful groove of Citizen Cope and a vocal aesthetic similar to the likes of Dave Mathews and John Mayer  this Boston based outfit have made imprints throughout the country this year. Whether it was opening for State Radio at the Nor’Easter Festival in New Hampshire or playing along side Dave Mathews, 311, and John Mayer at the Rothbury Festival in Michigan Adam Ezra Group worked hard this year to become a mainstay in the music scene .

Rantings of Eva
This Atlanta based quartet have had the year of their lives. After six years, Rantings of Eva achieved every band’s ultimate goal and received a record contract. The band entered themselves in the Spin Magazine Hot Pursuit contest, eventually winning the grand prize of a record deal with Original Signal/Epic Records, a brand-new Gibson SG guitar and bass, national press coverage in Spin, and a performance slot at Spin’s Year in Music party.

Say Vandelay
Calling themselves “progressive, aggressive, indie rock and roll” this Augusta, GA band has been around since 2006. With a sound somewhere in between Saosin and the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Say Vandelay went in to record their second EP “Actor Meets Actress” in July, and soon after were signed to Wisteria Records.

Kate Tucker and the Sons of Sweden
Washington state based Kate Tucker and the Sons of Sweden have made a ton of progress in 2008, playing major music festivals including South by Southwest, CMJ, and Bumbershoot. The band was also featured on the “Have You Heard” compilation released by Starbucks in July of this year.

Petticoat Junkies
The Petticoat Junkies‘ sound is something that you were more likely to hear opening up for The Band in the early 70’s than on stage with many current acts.  Though given the reemergence of the alt-country sound  driven by acts like Ryan Adams, Fleet Foxes, and My Morning Jacket, the Junkies have found a home in the world of Indie Rock. After forming in January 2008 the band hit the studio this past summer to record their first album with twang legend Will Ray of the Hellecasters at Sunset Sound Studios in Asheville, NC. The band has been playing shows ever since including a show opening for Brooklyn indie rocker Kaki King.

EMBED THIS VIDEO

It’s hard to imagine it going any better. A packed hometown crowd, cooperating weather, and beautifully played set by Kate Tucker & the Sons of Sweden.

Kate won the early afternoon Bumbershoot crowd over with her infectious smile and satiny voice while Mark Isakson (as the Seattle P.I. points out) provided an essential, pedal driven texture (think Joey Santiago, but quieter). The whole band played a great set and clearly won over a new crop of fans not far from their hometown of Ballard. It’s hard not to feel like we’ll be watching this band on one of the bigger Bumbershoot stages in the coming years.

Look for a new video this coming fall, or watch their OurStage grand prize winner from this past May, “Say Love.”
