FRIDAY FLOW: “MARYLAND MATTERS” BY CHRIS MCDONALD

OSBlog02_FridayFlow_MASTEREvery Friday on the OurStage blog, I’ll be featuring a great example of flow and lyricism in hip hop songs pulled from the OurStage ranks. I’ll get the artist’s thoughts on the song, as well as post the lyrics or best verse so fans can follow the flow themselves.

Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre both rapped about Compton. Nas already rapped about New York City. When was the last time someone rapped about Maryland? Well, Chris McDonald took matters into his own hands, writing his song “Maryland Matters” and putting the Mid Atlantic state back on the map. Even if you’re not from Maryland, you can get the message. Check out what Chris has to say about the song:

Catch his thoughts, pump the song, and check the lyrics after the jump

HOT BLOODED

hotspur

Sir Henry Hotspur Percy’s contribution to history was leading an unsuccessful siege against King Henry IV, thereby giving rise to the term “hotspur” — meaning a rash and hotheaded man. A mere 600 years later, a band from Rockville, Maryland has taken the name and given it an update. These days Hotspur signifies something less headstrong, more heartstrong. Think soaring power pop that leads a successful siege against moderation.  Sweeping pianos, chugging guitar distortion, dancey rhythms and epic choruses all combine to create a radio ready collection of storm and stress, love and loathing. On the single “Chandelier,” front man Joe Mach oozes obsession as he sings, “You’ve made it crystal clear / You are the chandelier / And I am the floor beneath you / So low I cannot reach you.” A verbal craft master, Mach injects the music with a good dose of drama, making each line crackle with emotion. But lest you think Hotspur is a band of boldfaced romantics, they do sell booty shorts through their merch store with the tagline, “Drop it like it’s Hotspur.” Sir Henry would be proud.

The Music:

l_bd298f1371c24f4683d182017ca76265Odd Girl Out - Fierce Baltimore pop-punkers Odd Girl Out are here to dispel once and for all the myth that girls can’t rock. The girls combine influences from Joan Jett to The Bangles to Hole to create their own high-energy sound. “Not Sandy” is the kind of track that makes you want to jump up and down and pump your fist in the air.

l_cb31688cecd74831b4819f72f24d0b8cGato & Palenke Music Co. – Just as their members come from all over Latin America, so do Gato & Palenke Music Co.’s influences: salsa, merengue, bomba, cumbia and more. For a band comprised of only strings and percussion, their sound is surprisingly full. Timbal, güira, conga and a variety of other Latin percussion instruments layer upon each other to form a pulsing rhythmic base for electric and acoustic guitars and soulful harmony vocals. You don’t need to speak Spanish to know that “El Incendio” is meant for dancing.

CDQGNVLWABBL-320x240The Unstoppable Nuklehidz – This Baltimore, MD hip hop duo succeeds at the tricky task of mixing socially conscious storytelling with a sense of humor. “Becky” tackles the topic of interracial relationships without sacrificing hooks or wit.

l_9b4853ee22c3493995e768cbcaedca90Tears of Mars - Tears of Mars might be a band of brothers, but the similarities to the JoBros end there. “Waiting to Explode” is a great piece of indie rock with passionate vocals that would sound at home on any record by The Killers or The Strokes.
