aoc_card_small2-11This week, we’re putting the spotlight on Ace of Clubs. Located under the Acme Bar & Grill in New York City’s NoHo neighborhood, Ace of Clubs is home to friendly bartenders and great music. From rock to soul to metal to indie to country—if its good, they book it. The club has been booking local, national and regional bands for 20 years, first at “Under Acme,”then “Acme Underground,” and for the last five years as “Ace of Clubs.” If the name Ace of Clubs sound familiar then maybe you were lucky enough to catch the CMJ 2008 OurStage Showcase at the club. Ace of Clubs is currently looking for indie rock, blues, hard rock, alternative, and acoustic rock artists for dates in August. Check out their listings in the OurStage Marketplace!

SHOW REVIEW: THE SLACKERS TAKE TO THE SEA IN BOSTON

New York City’s The Slackers have been spreading their own unique brand of Jamaican-influenced Ska to fans around the world since 1991. The band members are also involved in a number of great side projects such as Dave Hillyard and the Rocksteady Seven to Crazy Baldhead Sound System. For the past few years, The Slackers have hosted an annual “booze cruise” in NYC and, sadly, I have never been able to make it. Much to my surprise, this must-see band decided to set sail from Boston this past June! I was lucky enough to be in attendance, and I’m still recovering from this awesome show.

After leaving the dock at Rowes Wharf, Destroy Babylon kicked off the show with a very innovative and contemporary Dub-Reggae sound as well as great energy. After sunset, when we were well out into the Boston Harbor, The Slackers took the stage at the stern of the boat (surprisingly, the boat managed to stay afloat despite the  shear number of fans storming the stage.) After warming up with a few Slackers classics, such as the infamous sing-a-long “Married Girl” from their 1997 album Redlight, the crowd was sufficiently limber and ready to go. Front-men Vic Ruggiero and Dave Hillyard broke out some great new songs from their 2008 release Self Medication. The high energy rhythms and good vibes got the fans dancing and the boat rocking for the entire evening. The Slackers are anything but idle so chances are better than good that they’ll put on the most high energy show you will see. Check them out yourself!

DOWNLOAD OF THE WEEK: FUGITIVE SOULS

Brooklyn’s Fugitive Souls are here to serenade you with the dark, romantic melodies on this week’s free download, “Hang On”, off their debut EP, Strangers.   Singer, Mark Allen, formerly of the The Shapes, delivers an intimate, yet powerful performance akin to Muse’s Matt Bellamy. Beautiful piano chords punctuate Allen’s vocals while disco rhythms beat across the drummer’s hi-hat. Fans of The Cure and Interpol will feel right at home with this band’s approach to melodramtic, yet danceable love songs . If you happen to be in New York City on July 25th you can try catching the band live at the The Studio at Webster Hall while supporting our friends at Paste Magazine. Fugitive Souls along with Mixel Pixel, Anthem In, and a DJ set from Brazilian Girls‘ Didi are sure to make for an excellant line up at the upcomming Paste Magazine Benefit Concert.

MARKETPLACE NEWS: SPOTLIGHT ON THE DELANCEY

The OurStage Marketplace connects artists looking for gigs with venues looking for new talent. With amazing opportunities both around the USA and the world, the OurStage Marketplace is the place to be for up and coming artists!

This week we’re putting the spotlight on The Delancey. Located between hipster meccas the Lower East Side and Williamsburg, The Delancey can’t help but be one of New York City’s coolest bars. So it’s no surprise The Delancey maintains a loyal following among the skinny jean set but still draws a varied crowd from night to night depending on who’s playing. Past artists include Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Rye Coalition, Wyclef Jean (The Fugees), Tapes ‘n’ Tapes and Prince Paul (De La Soul).

And The Delancey’s ambiance is as varied as its music. While the ground floor lounge offers a long bar, DJ booth and a cool breeze, the downstairs boasts a killer sound system and mirrored walls so bands can easily turn it up to eleven and rock out. Up on the rooftop, an urban oasis awaits—complete with tropical flora, a fountain, an umbrella topped bar and a breathtaking view of the city. Just pick a floor to suit your mood.

The Delancey is currently looking for acoustic singer-songwriters and indie rock bands on OurStage. Check out their listings in the gigs section of the OurStage Marketplace and submit your EPK!
