Ameranouche: OurStage’s Favorite Acoustic Gypsy Jazz Power Trio

It’s a good thing Ameranouche came up with that description of themselves because otherwise we might be at a loss. We might call them a… jazzy… fun… upbeat… bag of awesomeness? It’s hard enough to define the average rock band these days! Whatever you call them, Ameranouche has been a unique perennial favorite on OurStage with first place wins in both 2007 and 2008 and a number of other high-ranking finishes. Last year they were selected by OurStage to play at the 2008 JVC Newport Jazz Festival.

Life is pretty exciting right now for the acoustic gypsy jazz power trio. They’ve got a brand new website and a brand new CD, Awake, coming out May 1st. Rhythm guitarist Ryan tells OurStage, “We are just hoping to get this music out to people. We worked the whole last year on the CD and we are very excited about the outcome.”  Ameranouche shouldn’t have any trouble getting the CD out there given the amount of live shows ahead of them right now. Their tour schedule is packed full through November 13th and will undoubtedly pick up even more shows, since the band recently announced via MySpace blog that they are “bookable by YOU” for private events.

Now that you know what the band is up to, you may be wondering,

“What exactly is an Ameranouche?”

“The name is derived from two words; American and Manouche, the latter word actually meaning Gypsy, also reffering to a specific tribe of Gypsies from which the great guitarist Django Reinhardt originated and the style of music often categorized as Gypsy Jazz.  Though Ameranouche is a modern, original group, its members acknowledge Django as an essential inspiration and spirit behind the groups ethos, and could never deny his influence, nor the encouragement and guidance of the Gypsy, Flamenco and Jazz community worldwide. So in a way, it is a way to say thank you and pay homage to all our influences. Thus you have the name, Ameranouche!”

Awake will be available on CD Baby, iTunes, eMusic, Amazon and more May 1st.
Keep your ears open! And don’t miss Ameranouche on tour this summer.

Anthony Hamilton at Newport Jazz

Anthony Hamilton & Soulive @ Newport Jazz

Anthony Hamilton took it to the limit on the main stage at the JVC Jazz fest in Newport this weekend. This soul man rocked out in a southern style and even brought his wife out for a song to showcase her amazing vocal skills. The positive energy he brought to the stage flooded the audience and by the end of the first song, all the dancers in the crowd were shakin their booties!

Anthony’s performance added a soul flavor to the jivin, jazzy vibe at the festival. Imagine my surprise when, less than an hour later, I’m standing backstage for the Soulive performance and Mr. Hamilton walks right in front of us and boogies onto the stage to perform alongside the band and their renowned guest Frank Wesley!

JVC Jazz managed to bring together musicians of all shapes, sizes, tones and textures in celebration of this legendary event. Here’s a moment where we can see music’s ability to blur the lines of separation and unite artist, fans and everyone in between. That, my friends, it true power.

COMING SOON:
After his show we caught up with Anthony backstage for an interview. He was cool, laid back and super funny – probably one of the most fun interviews I’ve ever done. See what happens when we ‘brush each others shoulders off’ and find out what it’s like for this soul man to jump into the jazz and funk community. Stay tuned for the interview coming soon!

Rappin with Mark Rapp @ Newport Jazz

In reading up on Mark Rapp before our Newport Jazz interview, three things stood out for me.

1. He’s an incredibly talented musician who uses his skills on the trumpet to create a unique tone that blends classic and modern jazz.

2. He played at the birthday party for Playboy Playmate Natalia Sokolova

3. He plays the didgeridoo

He’s got skills that land him among the most talented rising Jazz musicians on the scene and knocks down gigs everywhere from legendary festivals to a-list Hollywood parties – this guy is sort of a big deal. Stay tuned for the OurStage interview from the grounds of Newport Jazz where we caught up with Mark and chatted about his music, the jazz scene and the silly things you need to do with your mouth to play a didgeridoo…
