Quinn featured on Brooklyn Vegan (sort of)

As a relatively nascent indie music blogger, I never expected to be featured in Brooklyn Vegan (the indie music blog of all indie music blogs…along with Stereogum).

And I guess technically, I haven’t been. But the back of my head made an appearance in this post on Dan Deacon at Bumbershoot:

OurStage Fan Snaps Bumbershoot Photos

Remember Leah? For those of you reading yesterday, she was the lucky fan who won free tickets to Bumbershoot by commenting on one of my blog posts. Well, I discovered that she recently completed a degree in graphic design. So I took advantage of her skills in artistic composition by giving her a camera and asking her to take photos of some of the Bumbershoot bands. We started by getting her backstage access to Tyrone Wells’ set. Here are some pics she took of Tyrone and his band:

Meet The Prigs. More than just pub-rock.

It’s not like I was expecting a bad show.

If anything, The Prigs are one of the more fun and original bands I’ve come across on OurStage, with a Pogues-meets-Men-At-Work combination of raw, horn-laden punk/pop.

But remember that band you liked in college? Your friend’s band that made loud music, wrote songs about cereal, and dressed up in superhero outfits? Do you remember how you felt about going to their shows? You looked forward to it because you knew you’d have a good time. And the music? Well that was just bonus.

That’s kind of how I felt heading to the Prigs show.

Everything I encountered at T.T. the Bear’s Place validated those expectations. The muffled sound system, the opening band blasting generic funk riffs, the complete lack of carbonation in my small plastic cup of High Life. This was going to be fun.

Of course, I was wrong.

Not about the fun. The Prigs were plenty of fun. The lead singer, sporting camouflage shorts and soccer socks, danced and screamed with the abandon of a 12-year-old. The keyboardist wore a blonde wig and rocked a glorious white keytar. At one point, the bassist abandoned his own instrument to play the guitar still strapped to the lead singer. And so forth. But as the show went on, it became clear these guys weren’t just a bar band. The lead singer was actually a really good guitarist, making rapid and complex chord changes with ease. The keyboardist and two saxophonists plowed through scales with surprising dexterity. The drummer and bassist were admirably precise, holding together what should have been a train wreck.

And the more I listened, the more I realized The Prigs are not your college friend’s band. Underneath the wigs and headbands reside a group of talented musicians who just happen to be looking for a good time. And though I hesitate to describe The Prigs as subtle, their songs were unpretentiously complex. Every drunkenly chanted chorus was matched by blistering horn riff, well placed harmony, or time signature I couldn’t figure out for my life.

So, with the baffled amusement of a baseball fan who showed up to a little-league game to find out the actual Yankees and Red Sox were playing, I raised my small plastic cup of flat High Life in the air. This was more than I expected or required. Looking for a good time, I stumbled upon a band worth telling the world about.

As the chorus of their song “TV Reporter” reminded me, “Life ain’t so bad at all.”

Thursday Morning: The Quiet Before the Storm

It’s bright and early on the first day of Bonnaroo so we snuck out to capture the grounds before they started filling up!

bonnarooarch.jpg

Here you can see the Bonnaroo Arch. It’s one of the best known entry spots to the festival and it’s right across from one of the main camping grounds.

bowie.jpg

As we walked through the arch we were bordered on both sides by a bright blue/green wall covered in paintings of some of the most legendary acts in music … (and some dude in a hat)

dirtyandy.jpg

… oh yeah AND the most legendary names in film (OurStage videographer Andrew Bertino … a total bad ass)

bonnapoo.jpg

Bonna … poo? Yep, it’s one of everyone’s favorite parts of the festival – the ungodly amount of porta potties here. As soon as we past the blue/green wall we were met with these bad boys on our left. I wonder if the random purple one is for ’special circumstances’ … or just decoration … hmmm deep thoughts (give me a break … it’s early ;)

Isn’t it amazing that people need to be reminded of this …

stage.jpg

And here we are at the ‘What’ stage – THE biggest stage at Bonnaroo. Last year this stage played host to acts like the Police, Tool, the Roots & this year we’re looking forward to seeing Pearl Jam, Jack Johnson and Metallica.

It’s nice to know the planning staff behind Bonnaroo hasn’t lost their sense of humor. The stages & tents for the event are playfully named: What, Which, This, That & The Other. It’s fun to keep the concert goers on their toes as the battle the massive crowds and extreme heat to figure out where they should go next … touchee Bonnaroo … touchee :)

Well it’s about time for the fans to pour in and we’re off to meet Shinny, our biggest Bonnaroo fan. Stay tuned for more!!

Wednesday Afternoon: Bonnaroo or Bust!!!

Hey guys, we made it to Bonnaroo! It’s hot and humid here and there’s some pretty ridiculous lightning in the sky – which I tried to catch on camera but failed miserably at :) Our biggest fan, Shinny, just landed in Nashville right around midnight and he’s heading down to the Manchester area tonight. Stay tuned for more updates, pics & posts from Bonnaroo 2008. I’m working on getting some more pics up (having some technical difficulties with ‘ye old camera’) … but I thought you guys might enjoy the one below … the quiet before the storm!! … (notice the lack of ‘camping’ occurring in the ‘camping only’ area … ohhh just you wait ;)
