RUNNING DEEP

Other Lives

Probably not in Southern California: Other Lives

TBD Records is responsible for unleashing a hefty dose of melancholia into the American airwaves of late—first with the US release of Radiohead’s In Rainbows and now with Other Lives’ glimmering self-titled debut. Hailing from Stillwater, OK, the five-piece band cites lofty influences such as Jóhann Jóhannsson and Arvo Pärt, but you’re more likely to hear Beatles and Rufus Wainwright in the execution, which is a sweeter deal in the end.

Oscillating between saturnine piano rock and lilting, starry-eyed chamber pop, Other Lives willingly leads you through various mood shifts. Piano, cello and violin add orchestral nuances to the theatrical “AM Theme,” while singer Jesse Tabish lets his inner Hamlet come through in the world-weary waltz of “E Minor.” It’s an excellent little tune you’ll be happy to drift along with. But it’s their track “Black Tables” that will get the indie pundits buzzing. An iterating piano and yawning strings create an elegiac backdrop to Tabish’s quiet refrain: “With your body in mine restored / It’s good to see you once more.” “Black Tables” may remind you of the long, slow march to the soaring climax of Death Cab’s “Transatlanticism” or Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android.” The melody takes its time to unfold, but its epic break is worth the wait.

Other Lives also received a free logo design from our partner Alphabet Arm a while back. Cool!

The Venues:
Milwaukee’s annual Summerfest was certified as the World’s Biggest Music Festival in 1999 by Guinness World Records, and with over 700 artists on 11 stages for 11 days, it’s easy to see why. Summerfest is known for having a diverse lineup, and this year’s festival was no exception. Headliners included Kenny Chesney, Elvis Costello and the Imposters, Stevie Wonder, KISS, Lupe Fiasco, Bob Dylan, No Doubt and Buddy Guy. If you’re country music fan, then you just might want to consider relocating to Wisconsin. The state hosts a slew of country festivals with big name artists including Country Jam USA, Hodag Country Festival, Country Thunder and Country USA.

Outside the summer festival season, The Rave/Eagles Club in Milwaukee serves as a one stop shop for music fans of all genres. Housed in a historic 1926 meeting hall, this entertainment complex includes 6 different venues— from the 1,500 capacity Rave Hall to the 400 capacity Rave Vibe Room. The 500 capacity, all ages Rave Bar is the place to catch soon-to-be superstars. Blink-182, Pearl Jam and Nirvana all made their Wisconsin debut there. National acts like John Mayer, Green Day, Megadeth and Jason Mraz play the larger Rave Hall and Eagles Hall. And, according to Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale, the Rave/Eagles Club has “America’s coolest dressing room.”

The Music:

l_6a8889d0d1752da21b8a4d61d9372606Cedarwell – Eric Neave is the heart of Cedarwell. The main songwriter for the band, he pulls in friends and fellow musicians to lend a hand with recording and live performances. Whether acoustic, introspective, delicate or rough, the music of Cedarwell is always captivating. “Black Lung” is the kind of song best enjoyed while sitting by a warm fire on a chilly winter evening.  If you are a fan of the wintry introspection of Bon Iver, Cedarwell might be your new favorite band.

m_ec9d96266cf644b3a826f0777ad893a6The New Loud - The New Loud plays energetic dance party punk in the vein of The Bravery and Hot Fuss-era The Killers. The band has slowly been building up buzz since their formation in 2001: “Secrets” from their 2006 EP ME(secrets)YOU was featured on the Hollister Co. Web site and in Hollister Co. stores for six months. This exposure helped to earn them over 40,000 Myspace plays in 12 months. The New Loud is currently working on their first full length album and will be playing CMJ 2009. They recently recorded a cover of Radiohead’s “2+2=5,” which can be streamed on their blog.

m_c94e3852c588860b439e8f3c3dfd13cfPale Young Gentlemen – Madison, Wisconsin’s Pale Young Gentlemen’s combination of indie rock with a string section (cello, viola and violin) has lead them to share the stage with Bishop Allen, Beach House, Cloud Cult and Andrew Bird. “Clap Your Hands,” from their 2007 self-titled debut album showcases the bands effortless blending of Eastern European folk influences with pop sensibilities. 2008’s Black Forest (Tra La la), Pale Young Gentlemen’s most recent album, has earned them rave reviews from VenusZine and Cokemachineglow. In addition to releasing an album in 2008, the band also recorded a haunting cover of M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes,” which you can listen to here.

m_879b66f531b942c2a598b7d6b092a7f2Will Phalen and The Stereo Addicts – For those of you who like a little experimentalism with your alt. country, check out “I Can’t Run” from Will Phalen and The Stereo Addicts’ new album Middle West. The album, produced by the band, has traditional folk instruments like banjo and mandolin rubbing shoulders with analog synthesizers and concert bells. Will Phalen and The Stereo Addicts brought their self-described “cosmic American music” to this year’s Summerfest, where they opened for Soulive.

OURSTAGE MODEL U.N. – FINLAND + BONUS Q&A WITH THE DUKE’S MIKKO KANANOJA

For this week’s edition of Model U.N., we return to Scandinavia to put the spotlight on Sweden’s eastern neighbor Finland. While few Finnish acts find fame and fortune stateside, the ones who get the most recognition tend to be hard rock and metal acts. To find out if the Finnish music scene is really all gloom and doom, we consulted a bona fide Finn! Mikko Kananoja, guitarist and lead singer for The Duke, was kind enough to answer a barrage of questions ranging from wife carrying to Eurovision. Don’t forget to check out the playlist of fine Finnish artists on OurStage below.

SC: Most people in the states are in the dark about the Finnish music scene aside from a handful of hard rock acts such as HIM and Lordi. Is it tough being a “non-metal” rock band in Finland? Care to shed some light on what genres are popular with the Finnish kids these days? What Finnish bands you would recommend checking out?

MK: It’s such a shame that Finland is always known for heavy music because people are into pop-rock stuff just as much. Bands like Radiohead, Muse and Coldplay —everybody likes them here wherever you go here. When Finnish festivals start to book people are always asking for these kinds of bands. We’re hearing a lot from record companies that “there’s no music market in Finland for bands like The Duke” but I don’t think so at all. It’s not easy for us being in this genre—retroish pop-rock—but at least we’re always standing out from the crowd. I would recommend checking out Finnish-language bands like Egotrippi and Wiidakko. Some Finnish bands with English lyrics I would recommend are Montevideo, Rubik and The Death of Gagarin. Really cool music!

DOWNLOAD OF THE WEEK: THE DUKE

theudke-520x520

One of the more intriguing “retro-rock” acts out there is a band called The Duke from Vaasa, Finland. With influences covering the spectrum from The Moody Blues to Radiohead, this band manages to offer fresh and original songwriting while honoring their roots.  The Finnish four-piece formed back in 2000 as the brainchild of Mikko Kananoja, the band’s vocalist and guitarist, out of his desire to make “60’s style retro pop-rock.”   Since then the band released a few EP’s and cultivated quite the local following by touring all over their home country. This week’s free track, “We Come from The Same” is fresh off the band’s Push Me Back into The Black EP, which was released in June. The slow, epic build up gives way to one of the most heart wrenching guitar solos since “Purple Rain.”  Hopefully there’s a full-length release and an American tour in the works!
