SXSW is in full swing, despite last night’s tragedy, and as we move forward in one of the music industry’s biggest festivals, we’re beginning to see the first of the SXSW coverage popping up online. From performances to reviews, it’s almost enough to make those of us not there feel like we’re in the crowd. For former OurStage Artists of the Week, Vic and Gab, last night went off without a hitch as they performed their single “Let You Down.” Check out the clip right here and catch the duo on tour throughout the Midwest this March and April.
Many of us have woken up to the terrible news out of Austin, TX that a driver fleeing a DUI stop at around 12:30 a.m. local time broke through the barriers near The Mowhawk, near Red River and 10th, and plowed into a crowd waiting outside the club for one of the many official showcases of the annual South By Southwest music festival and conference. At this time, two are confirmed dead with reportedly 23 injured.
Names of victims and the driver have not been released. Police say the driver continued down the street a bit after hitting the people outside The Mowhawk and at that point struck two people on a moped, who are reportedly the two fatalities. The driver attempted to flee on foot but was hit with a stun gun and apprehended by Austin police. He faces two counts of capital murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault with a motor vehicle.
It’s hard to believe this could have been worse, but anyone who has been to the festival in recent years has seen how completely packed the streets can be. Only minutes before the incident, police had cleared the waiting crowd from the street onto a sidewalk.
Our thoughts are with the victims and our hearts go out to the families of those injured and killed.
As if hitting one of the music industry’s largest and most talked about festivals wasn’t enough, Rachel Sage has planned a full tour around her dates at SXSW. After hitting Austin from March 12-15, Sage will make stops in New Mexico, Arizona, and California for a mini West Coast tour through the end of March. Although only West Coast dates have been announced, Sage has promised fans that East Coast and Midwest dates will follow. Keep an eye out for Sage’s full-fledged US tour date announcement, and check out current dates below. (more…)

Hard to believe, but SXSW has announced yet another round of new artists, bringing the total to an amazing 2,000-plus acts. But after seeing that the new additions include The 1975, Against Me!, and St. Vincent we have to admit it’s worth expanding an already enormous lineup. Also performing will be Kelis, Damon Albarn, Chromeo, Ingrid Michaelson, Kylesa, Speedy Ortiz, SZA, Lucius, Jacques Green, together PANGEA, Women’s Hour, Betty Who, and Lost in the Trees. You can view the full lineup here (warning: it’s going to take you a while to sift through), and catch SXSW from March 7-16 in Austin, TX.
MTVu will be joining the South By Southwest roster with the 2014 Woodie Awards and music festival on March 13 in Austin, TX. Although nominees and performers have yet to be announced, last year’s lineup included hosts Tegan and Sara, and Machine Gun Kelly, with performances by HAIM, Jake Bugg, and Alt-J, so let’s keep our fingers crossed for an equally awesome lineup this year. You can catch a 30-minute special highlighting the evening’s events on MTV and MTVU on Sunday, March 16 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
