Jeff Bridges as Bad Blake

It’s official, country music is taking over every aspect of pop culture. On March 7th at the Academy Awards, the Best Actor Oscar went to Jeff Bridges for his role as downtrodden country-western legend Bad Blake in the film Crazy Heart. The movie garnered rave reviews upon its release, and was said to be one of the most honest portrayals of country music’s fading stars. Also at the Academy Awards was Tim McGraw whose film, The Blind Side, was nominated for Best Picture. Although the film didn’t win, Tim’s costar Sandra Bullock took home the Best Actress award for her work in the film.

The day before the Oscars, March 6th, was just a typical Saturday night for Brad Paisley. That is until he toppled down a ramp on stage during his concert. Brad was taken to the hospital, and to his fans’ great relief he was only badly bruised. After watching the video, his lack of serious injuries seems like a miracle since it appears to be quite the nasty fall. Thankfully, Brad’s back in business, and was able to shoot a new video for us on March 9th.

On tour with Keith and the Chicks

The upcoming summer tour season is getting better. Keith Urban, The Dixie Chicks (yes, all three of them) and The Eagles are officially hitting the road. TOGETHER.  The tour starts June 8th and includes 7 scheduled dates,  4 of which have Urban on the bill. Surely, this tour will help fill the void left by Kenny “Extravagant Summer Tour King” Chesney.

Miranda has 6 nominations to be proud of

This week has been a big week for country music. The Academy of Country Music Award nominees were announced on The Early Show on Tuesday by Reba McIntire and Blake Shelton. The leaders of the pack include some names you were fully expecting” Taylor Swift (ehem), Carrie Underwood and Lady Antebellum. But Miranda Lambert and The Zac Brown Band snuck up on viewers as 2 of the top contenders, with six and four nominations respectively. This year will be a big year for the ACM’s, and with Kenny Chesney only releasing his last record over a year ago, the male category awards are a toss up. Personally, it would be great to see nominee Darius Rucker walk away with Male Vocalist of the Year considering the album and singles he’s released in the last ACM calendar year. However, I have to admit, some categories are pretty predictable if you look at other award show wins. For example, I don’t think there’s much question about who’s going to nab Entertainer of the Year or Album of the Year. If you’ve paid any attention to country music for the past 2 years, you know as well as I do that Taylor Swift has those awards on lockdown, and good for her. I do wonder how many mantels she’ll need to display her awards after the year she’s had, but what’s a couple more from the 2010 ACM’s?

A day has come that few country fans looked forward to. We all knew it was coming, but without a definite end in sight, I think country lovers half-hoped that Brooks & Dunn were only kidding about hanging up their hats in 2010. But, as of August 10, 2010, there will never be another Brooks & Dunn performance to look forward to. The concert, taking place in Nashville, will occur one year after Kix and Ronnie’s announcement that they were parting ways. As much of a loss as this is to country music, the appreciation and love for Brooks & Dunn in the hearts and radios of country listeners will hopefully go on forever.

Brooks & Dunn, are done.

Jessica Harp, former member of The Wreckers with Michelle Branch, is “leaving the pieces” of her singing career behind, according to a letter posted on her Web site. Harp, who has released two singles since leaving The Wreckers, says that songwriting is her new focus. The lyrical content and emotion of the songs Harp has been a part of indicate that writing is truly where her talent lies, so she deserves the best of luck in this new adventure. Hopefully, “things are sweeter in Tennessee” for Jessica as a songwriter.

Let’s focus on the obvious”this year’s GRAMMY Awards. Actually, from now on, any award show should just be entitled, “The Taylor Swift Show. It seems monotonous to report on Miss Swift winning awards, breaking records, or putting out Number 1 singles”and to be honest, it is. This young star has undeniable talent, and what she has done in the last year cannot be ignored.

Quite a familiar sight

Quite a familiar sight

However, “Album of the Year” had stiff competition, and many would agree that there were other, perhaps more deserving nominees. Beyoncé, of course, has the pipes of a goddess and while Taylor can write quite the little diddy, the artists nominated for this prestigious award all put in hard work. Not to discredit the amazing work of Taylor and her team, it may have made things a bit more interesting to see a different artist step onstage this year and deliver an I can’t believe this is happening to lil ol’ me speech. Nevertheless, having a country star win what many call the biggest honor of the night made a huge impact on music listeners everywhere. Whether or not Taylor mania has reached a fever pitch remains to be seen, but few can deny that the notoriety and accolades she’s received this past year has done wonders for our small, but resilient community of country listeners.

Another big moment from the biggest night in music was the “Best New Artist” award. What many would call the opposite of Taylor Swift ” scruffy, raspy, down home country ” the Zac Brown Band proved that all types of country are being celebrated and accepted. Its very possible that the hype and frenzy surrounding Taylor Swift is the reason that other bands, like Zac and the boys, have the opportunity to shine. Miss Swift has opened the eyes of the entire music industry to country music, and that accomplishment alone is worth millions. The ZBB also performed at the GRAMMY’s, singing America the Beautiful, a moment that screamed country music.

The entire night was really a huge success for country’s leading men and women. Carrie Underwood took home a statue for her vocal collaboration with Randy Travis for I Told You So, Lady Antebellum also won their first GRAMMY for “Country Performance by Duo or Group with Vocals.” And Keith Urban took the lead as the most awarded modern male country singer when he took home the award for “Male Country Performance.”

The New Mr. Country Music

The New Mr. Country Music

The pride for our genre grew immensely as each performer stepped on stage and silently cheered as they accepted trophy after trophy. As if to say- Long live country!

For the most part, January 2010 has been pretty low-key for many country music stars. However, the devastating effects of Haiti’s earthquake brought out their power in force for the victims and their families. These humanitarian efforts come as no surprise to those of us who know that country stars readily flock to the aid of others, no matter where or for whom, at the first sign of distress. Now, as the world anxiously watches, the giving hearts of millions is truly showcased. America’s sweetheart Taylor Swift, and apparently Haiti’s too, represented the country community during MTV’s Hope for Haiti Now telethon that aired Friday on MTV. Keith Urban and Sheryl Crow also joined T. Swift to raise funds to aid the relief efforts of the disastrous effects from the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked Haiti on January 12th.

The last week of December not only marked the end of the year but also put an end to many men’s dreams of marrying the lovely Miss Carrie Underwood.

Future Mr. and Mrs. Underwood

Future Mr. and Mrs. Underwood

Well, that is except for one lucky Canadian. Mike Fisher, a professional hockey player for the Ottowa Senators, proposed to Underwood on December 20th, and their engagement was confirmed the very next day. A couple who has me questioning which one is prettier, this match seems made in blonde-haired heaven. Fisher is undoubtedly a very fortunate man, claiming the most beautiful woman in country music, but after seeing the rock he put on Underwood’s finger at Wednesday’s People’s Choice Awards, its pretty clear the table is evenly set for this couple in both the luck and love departments.

Another country artist ending 2009 on a high note was Taylor Swift.

A Record-setting record

A Record-setting record

In fact, 2009 might as well be called “the year of the Swift,” because in addition to nabbing countless awards for her simple and undeniably relatable tunes, her second album Fearless was the highest selling album overall for the last year of this decade. She narrowly surpassed phenom Susan Boyle’s debut album I Dreamed A Dream by a mere 100,000 albums, though Fearless was released almost a full year prior. Nevertheless, Taylor swiftly nabbed this honor and the CD players of approximately 3,217,000 album buyers this year, and in doing so has changed the tide of the music industry.

Along with Swift’s record making waves for country music,

Right before the big win!

Right before the big win!

Wednesday’s telecast of the People’s Choice Awards proved that country music is not just a fleeting moment for one artist, and  is here to stay. In the Male and Female “Favorite Artist” categories, open to all genres, country singers Keith Urban and, big surprise, our girl Taylor claimed the awards. Keith was a more than pleasant surprise, and is more representative of country’s renewed strength in music overall. However, it makes you wonder whether Taylor won her award based on her country roots, or the pop versions released to appease a larger audience. Either way, both Keith and Taylor are phenomenal artists, and represented country music proudly. But let’s not forget about our girl Carrie. Adding on to the excitement of being newly engaged, Carrie Underwood also ran off with the People’s “Favorite Country Artist” award, proving she really can have it all. The fans have spoken, and from the looks of the People’s Choice Awards, it is becoming increasingly clear that country music is the music of the people.

December ended one of the biggest years for country music in decades, and helped January open with opportunities Nashville has never seen before. With country music been at the forefront of music conversations, and with a year like 2009 in our wake, we have the momentum to truly change entertainment in 2010!
