Foo Fighters, Imagine Dragons, The Roots Streaming Super Bowl Concert

Foo Fighters

Foo Fighters

As someone who doesn’t really follow sports, the Super Bowl kind of snuck up on me this year. And while you’re all getting ready to gorge on chicken wrapped in bacon (yum) and cheering for your favorite team, I’ll be looking forward to one thing, and one thing only:  a series of concerts by Foo Fighters, The Roots, and Imagine Dragons which will be streamed live via The Roots will kick things off tomorrow night with a program dubbed “The Roots Present Hip-Hop NYC,” featuring appearances by Run-DMC, Busta Rhymes, and more. Friday will bring Imagine Dragons to the stage at 12 a.m. EST, and Saturday belongs to the Foo Fighters.

Perhaps the coolest part of all of this, besides the actual streaming, is that the performances will be taking place on an aircraft carrier stationed in the Hudson River. Check it all out beginning at 11pm EST tomorrow night.

Prince Will Appear On 'New Girl.' Wait, What?

princeYeah, we gather that Prince, his purple majesty, likes to crash out in front of the TV on Tuesday nights and watch Zooey Deschanel on New Girl. There is officially nothing left for us to be surprised about.

Unless he were to appear on the sitcom, having pitched his own idea to the producers that they do an episode involving his famous, real-life pajama parties. Which is what is happening.

This is highly irregular.

The episode will air after the Super Bowl on February 2nd.

Five Entertainment Alternatives For Super Bowl Sunday

If you’re among the many who cringe at the thought of partaking in any Super Bowl Sunday festivities, fear not. Just because you don’t want to paint your face the color of your favorite team, wear your favorite player’s jersey, or spend the day jumping up and down screaming in joy (or anguish) doesn’t mean you can’t have a good time this weekend. In fact, with most people preoccupied by the game, there’s a lot to do with no crowds to deal with, and since you probably have no obligations, might as well take advantage. We’ve put together a list of five entertainment alternatives for those wishing to sit out the “big day” this Sunday. Check them out after the jump. (more…)

The 5 Best and Worst Music-Related Super Bowl Commercials Of All Time

Before you settle back into your La-Z-Boy this Sunday to watch the big game, let’s take a moment to recap some of the best and worst music-related Super Bowl commercials ever to grace your TV screen. Let’s just hope that The Flaming Lips don’t embarrass themselves in their much-hyped Hyundai ad this year.

Who better to talk about the gritty determination that defines Detroit than the poster bad boy of the Motor City, Eminem? This brooding car ad actually instilled a spot of Motown pride amid the general goofiness that usually defines Super Bowl commercials. Good job, Rabbit. (more…)

Flaming Lips Reveal New Album, Upcoming Super Bowl Spot

There’s never a dull moment for The Flaming Lips. Whether they’re filming NSFW videos with Amanda Palmer, beating Jay-Z’s record for most live concerts played in 24 hours, releasing music inside of gummy skulls, or rolling around in giant plastic balls at their live shows, Wayne Coyne and company are always on the lookout for their next thrill. So of course, the announcement of the April 2 release of their album The Terror wasn’t complete without an additional surprise out of left field; this Super Bowl Sunday, they will be performing a new song, “Sun Blows Up Today,” in a Hyundai commercial during the big game. The 60-second spot, an advertisement for the Hyundai Santa Fe, will feature the band hanging out on a suburban rooftop playing the new tune, which will be available for 100,000 free downloads from the Hyundai website and as a bonus track on the digital album.

According to Coyne, the “great, very strange, beautiful, emotional record” was written between sessions for the band’s previous 2012 release The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends. You can find the official track list for The Terror, as well as a still from the upcoming commercial, below the jump.

Justin Timberlake To Perform Solo For First Time In Four Years

After a four-year-long absence from solo performance, Justin Timberlake will finally take the stage this February 2 at a charity concert in New Orleans to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children. The invitation-only “DirecTV Super Saturday Night” concert will also feature DJing from The Roots drummer ?uestlove. For those who were invited to catch this prime lineup, it’s going to be a pretty awesome weekend; Super Bowl XLVII will be taking place the following day in New Orleans at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Earlier this month, Timberlake premiered “Suit & Tie,” the latest single from his forthcoming solo album The 20/20 Experience, the singer’s first solo outing since 2006’s FutureSex/LoveSounds. Check out the brand new lyric video for “Suit & Tie” here.
