We all start from the bottom. Climbing to the top depends on drive, talent, time, and, yes, some luck. But when Taylor Swift‘s 1989 World Tour rolled through our hometown of Boston last week, we were struck by two other artists who shared the stage with the superstar singer. Both HAIM, the band of sisters who are opening a string of dates on the tour, and Swift’s surprise guests Walk The Moon were once struggling artists who got started here on OurStage. HAIM first joined us in 2009, in time to seek a slot in our Lilith Fair competition that year. Walk The Moon is currently riding the success of their hit “Shut Up And Dance” (which they performed with Swift in Boston). We first heard them in 2009, when they were on that year’s July editorial playlist, and then spotlighted them here in 2011, before they blew up. We’re very glad to have had the opportunity to help promote them and serve as a platform for these artists to share their music and find new fans.
This isn’t the first time Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran have teamed up for a surprise duet, nor is it the first time that the audience has responded with a deafening roar of applause. But on February 1st, as Swift played the 02 Arena in London, she teased fans with a new performance, and before long Sheeran had taken over the stage. Check out the performance below, and catch Swift on the last leg of her Red tour in London and Berlin this February.

I imagine that there’s a certain feeling of flattery in being named one of the most illegally downloaded artists of the year. Musicmetric, which analyzes data from Bit Torrent, has revealed that at over five million downloads each, Bruno Mars and Rihanna earned the top spots in this category, while Justin Timberlake, Daft Punk, and Flo Rida rounded out the top five. Also in the top 10 were Kanye West, Jay Z, Eminem, Drake, and Pitbull.
Gregory Mead of Musicmetric reminds readers that the analytics “don’t condone piracy,” but rather help artists plan around where their fans are, in order to optimize tours ” similar to what Iron Maiden has started doing. Musicmetric also measures social media success, and found Taylor Swift to be the winner, with an added 29.5 million new followers in 2013, with Katy Perry close behind at an added 29.2 million new followers.

Who would have thought that Bon Jovi, Taylor Swift, and future king of England, Prince William would share the stage for a weird, yet oddly compelling version of “Living On A Prayer”? At Monday night’s charity gala for Centrepoint at Kensington Palace in London, the three did just that. Performing for celebrities that included Colin Firth and Downton Abbey‘s Michelle Dockery, the three belted out vocals for an endearing unplugged rendition. You can check out a short clip of the action right here.
Speaking to Billboard associate director of charts Keith Caulfield, Swift said, “We got a lot already. There are probably seven or eight [songs] that I know I want on the record. It’s really ahead of schedule for me. I’m just stoked because it’s already evolved into a new sound, and that’s all I wanted. And I would have taken two years to make that happen, but it just kind of happened naturally, so that’s all I could really ask for.”
Swift also took home the awards for Country Album of the Year and Favorite Female Country Artist. Check out the full list of winners here.
