The road to stardom can be bumpy at times. There can be financial difficulties, relationship strains … or a run-in with the law in Fort Worth, Texas that leaves you tased and incarcerated.

So goes the story of Kashan, an ambitious R&B balladeer from Tennessee. Despite these inauspicious beginnings, Kashan survived the tasing and made it out of Texas with his dreams intact. Now safely nestled in Brooklyn, the singer is putting his nose to the grindstone to begin work on his debut CD—with the help of his musical cohorts, the SimplySoul Band. Here’s what you can look forward too: stripped-down love songs, mellow R&B grooves, funky guitar lines lapping at syncopated drum beats, chimes, finger snaps and Kashan’s capable croon. Expect big things from this determined artist … but maybe not a show in Texas any time soon.

The Venues: Anybody who’s anybody in the world of country music plays at The Grand Ole Opry. The oldest continuous radio program in the US, The Grand Ole Opry currently broadcasts live from Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry House. Also in Nashville is Exit/Inn where rock crowds can catch acts as diverse as Etta James and GWAR. Yes, GWAR.

The Music:

Their track “To The Disco” is just as catchy as anything by the Strokes or Kaiser Chiefs. In fact, you may remember it from our prom playlist a few weeks back. One listen and you’ll know why “Ennui” has been in the Experimental Channel’s top 10 for all of 2009.  So, if you crave novel but listenable music á la Bradford Cox’s Atlas Sound, Canon Blue is for you.

mnvvxrmqooro-320x240Buffalo Clover – Bringing the Tennessee twang is Buffalo Clover.  The band draws influences from early blues, folk and gypsy music to create a sound all their own. Their song “15 Reasons” finished in the Americana Channel’s top 10 last month.
