Jared Perck asks the questions...

I just moved to Nashville and want to take my career to the next level as a songwriter. I could use some help from those that are living in the Nashville area. Would like to know where they hang out. I could use all the friends I can find out here in the music city as a new face in the crowd.

Sincerely,

Jerad

The Family Wash and The Basement are two spots with live music that you can meet the most folks in a hurry around here. Both have their own versions of open mic nights – you gotta contact each place to set it up in advance, but if you’re good and/or get a good response, they’ll have you back and you’ll meet a lot of folks who know a lot of folks that know a lot of folks. Rock, Folk, Country, Bluegrass, Soul… these two joints have it all. (The Family Wash also has good food and great beer on tap, and the Basement sits atop Nashville’s best CD store, Grimey’s.)

...and Steve Gorman rocks the answers.

The Bluebird Cafe has live music 7 nights a week and a ‘new songwriters’ night every Sunday. For country songwriters, this is where you want to get in and get noticed. Daylight hours find most musicians, songwriters, producers, and general industry riff raff hanging out at one of several coffee shops – Fido, Bongo Java (2 locations, same owner) Sip, and Portland Brew (both locations) are prime meeting spots for everyone I know. Everyone here came from somewhere else, so everyone knows how you feel as a newcomer in town. And, because of that, most people are pretty cool about helping others out. Give firm handshakes and look people in the eye. Some things never go out of style.

Cheers!

CONGRATS TO MATT MAYS & EL TORPEDO FROM OURSTAGE AND ERNIE BALL

Matt Mays & El Torpedo

When you’re in a band and on tour stuff breaks all the time — especially guitar strings. That’s why every month the folks at Ernie Ball team up with OurStage to help out one of our top-ranking artists. In May, the support of OurStage’s fan judges launched Nova Scotian rockers Matt Mays & El Torpedo into the Top 10 of the Rock Channel. Their track “Building a Boat” features all the scorching hot guitar riffs and fist pumping rhythms you want out of a classic rock tune. To reward the band, the group will receive a year’s supply of Ernie Ball guitar and bass strings — a prize that will come in handy when they open for The Black Crowes at the upcoming FredRock Festival in Fredericton, New Brunswick on June 20th as a kick off for a set of summer tour dates in Ontario and Alberta.

SHOWS, SHOWS, SHOWS: SUMMER TOUR SEASON IS HERE!

No Doubt

No Doubt

As live performances become more crucial to the revenue stream of the full time musician, more acts—old and new—are going on tour this summer. And you can bet your bottom dollar that this summer’s tour season is chockfull of great musical acts to blow your hard-earned recession pennies on. Sugar Ray is gearing up to tour in support of their first new album in six years. Nineties radio staples like No Doubt and Blink-182 are headlining reunion tours. If Blink-182 getting back together isn’t enough to satisfy your penchant for pop punk power chords, Green Day will be hitting the road this summer as well.

Eighties powerhouses Blondie and Pat Benatar are joining forces to co-headline a U.S. tour — with the all-girl punk rock band The Donnas as the opening act, it’s sure to be a quality girls night out for those of you lucky enough to score tickets.

Phish's Trey Anastasio

Quintessential live favorites such as Dave Matthews Band, AC/DC, Jimmy Buffet, The Black Crowes, Wilco and Phish are all on the road again much to the delight of their hardcore fans.

There are also plenty of up-and-coming acts and college radio artists playing shows that you can enjoy without taking out a second mortgage on your home. For Wolf Parade fans, frontman Spencer Krug’s other band — Sunset Rubdown — will be kicking off a U.S. tour in June. Still smarting because you didn’t get Animal Collective tickets? Sunset Rubdown’s Jagjaguwar labelmates, Pterodactyl, will be crisscrossing the country to console you. On the local scene, Boston’s soon-to-be superstar electro-pop outfit, Passion Pit, will be touring in support of their much anticipated LP, Manners. And finally, OurStage’s New York power pop rockers, Blameshift, are playing shows you need to check out before it’s time to go back to school.
