MY FAVORITE HIGHWAY’S ROAD TO SUCCESS

In today’s music industry dominated by American Idol and a wide array of pop stars, independent rock bands must often try extra hard to break out. Unlike the cliched qualities of your typically pop rock group, My Favorite Highway is a dynamic quartet that brings new meaning to the scene.

Starting much like any other band, their aspirations could not change the fact that their career’s future looked bleak. The band will be the first to admit that they were almost pushed to their limit and even considered giving up. After weeks of eating only peanut butter in the back of their tour van, the band decided enough was enough and it was time to take a different approach to writing music. David Cook (the band’s main songwriter), “began writing furiously, crafting a series of hook-filled power-pop anthems anchored by keenly felt lyrics about what [the band] was going through.” This classic case of “rising from the ashes” and overcoming adversity, won the band a long list of honors including two song placements on the MTV hit show, “The Hills,” two different Alternative Press features, and most notably, a record contract signed with Virgin Records in November of ‘08.

l_9f03b9dca6ef4f5896fed39e5bf4fd9fFollowing in the footsteps of bands like Yellowcard and the Click Five, this group’s sound is chock-full of pleasing melodies, well-rounded instrumentation, and poppy song structures. Don’t let this fool you though. My Favorite Highway brings a unique sound to the pop realm with heavy, driving rhythm, and to the rock realm with a radio-friendly melodic approach. With self-proclaimed influences including Coldplay, John Mayer, and Maroon 5, the band clearly has the right idea. In fact, their latest album, How To Call a Bluff (recently re-released on Virgin Records) was originally recorded with the help of producer Paul Barber and mixing engineer Jeff Juliano (John Mayer, Dave Matthews, and Jason Mraz).

After signing to Virgin Records, the band is still humbled by the opportunities presented to them. When asked about the recent record deal, lead singer David Cook had this to say:

“It’s all very surreal. It’s very much a ‘dream come true’ kind of experience. This is something that we worked so hard for so long to attain, and it’s really cool to see all of our hard work pay off, so to speak. All of us are very excited right now, but we’re just taking it one day at a time, we know we have a long road ahead of us.”

You can catch My Favorite Highway this summer on the What Happens in Vegas Tour with The Cab, The Secret Handshake, Rocket to the Moon and fellow OurStage band, Anarbor.

ON THE ROAD WITH CAROLINA LIAR

chadwolf

If you don’t know Carolina Liar by sight, you certainly know them by sound. The L.A. rock outfit’s smash hit, “Show Me What I’m Looking For,” has commandeered the airwaves thanks to features on MTV’s The Hills, 90210 and a new television ad from Overstock.com. We checked in with frontman Chad Wolf to get a glimpse of  life as a newfound touring rock star.

Best show so far?
Honestly each show is a pretty good time but right now the Ellen show was one of our biggest moments.

One thing you have to have on the road?
I carry a copy of the book “Immortal Man” with me everywhere I go. It just reminds me to create the world I want to live in.

If you’re the DJ on the tour bus, what are you playing?
Right now a lot of Thin Lizzy, Lady Gaga, Phoenix, some World Party maybe some Django.

Moment you look forward to the most at each show?
I generally find that about three songs in, everything starts to get really entertaining.

Current favorite song to play live?
I still like playing “I’m Not Over” – it gets rowdy.

Favorite way to kill time on the road?
Reading. I love to read.

Any show you’re especially looking forward to?
There are some big summer festivals that are coming up that should really be fun. We might play V Fest in Europe. It could be cool.

License to Sing

The music industry is changing and the tell-tale signs of success from the old days just aren’t as applicable anymore. Today, in addition to radio plays and record sales, success is also measured by digital distribution, downloads, and media placement. In this spirit, we’ve found our top 5 favorite licensing stories right here from OurStage. Check them out.

alissa-morenoAlissa Moreno: At the top of our list lies this accomplished singer/songwriter. Her powerfully simple songs have landed her feature spots on MTV, NBC, Fox, CBS, and many more. These features aren’t just small mentions, either. Her catchy tunes can be heard on hit shows like “The Hills“, “Laguna Beach“, “Newport Harbor“, “Wonderfalls“, “Will and Grace“, and “How I Met Your Mother“. Moreno doesn’t stop there. She’s even earned a Grammy nomination for her well-crafted songwriting. “Every Day“, a popular hit sung by Rascal Flatts, was nominated this past year for best songwriting. This is one artist you won’t want to miss before she “hits it big”.

marrMarr: This powerful, adrenaline-pumping metal band had the honor of licensing a song for the New Line Cinema feature “Shoot Em’ Up” (starring Clive Owen, Paul Giamatti and Monica Belucci). The song “Landscape” caught the ears of New Line placement exec’s and seemed to be a stellar match for the non-stop, edge-of-your-seat action film. The band was even invited to play a minor role in the movie. The DVD can be purchased now.

kilroyKilroy: This classic rock-inspired group has had its share of success on OurStage. It is no surprise then, that their music has been featured on such mainstream media outlets as MTV and FoxSports. Their nostalgic, upbeat style have made them a perfect fit for a recent FoxSports college football special, where they were invited to perform their energetic song, “Shake ‘Em Down”, to be paired with a high-ranking team. am

AM: Indie Singer/Songwriter, AM, credits himself with an impressive 46 song placements on TV and in movies. These placements include notable names like HBO’s “Big Love“, ABC’s “Men In Trees“, MTV’s “The Hills” and TNT’s “Trust Me“. This artist clearly shows how licensing can be used as a springbaord for more traditional music industry accomplishments (”Best Singer/Songwriter of the Year” at the LA Weekly Music Awards and a showcase at SXSW). Check out this artist’s smooth melodies and honest image. He certainly has a lot to say.

mollymarletteMolly Marlette: This trend-setting indie singer has certainly established a strong following in the industry (popular youtube videos, strong fan following on OurStage and MySpace, etc.). Marlette’s song “Constantly” was featured on the hit television series “One Tree Hill“, as a perfect representation of the show’s uplifting drama and universal themes. This feature earned her significant credibility and actually helped lead to her online popularity.

These artists may have proven themselves time and again on the OurStage charts, but they’ve also utilized other media as a powerful tool for furthering themselves as artists. In a changing musical world, artists can benefit from embracing licensing because, it is a new way to reach fans in unexpected places. Maybe these artists have inspired you to listen closer when you’re watching your favorite show. You never know what you’ll discover.

Singer/Songwriter Alissa Moreno

This multi-talented singer/songwriter may appear to have coasted through the music industry “under the radar” as of late. However, if you haven’t heard of her yet, you will soon.  Her recent successes on OurStage in our female singer channel are only the beginning of the mark she has left in the industry. Born on a Navajo Indian Reservation, Moreno has been musically inclined and classically trained since the age of two. Recently her song “Hey World” was featured on the MTV series “The Hills”. Her success as an artist, however, isn’t the only feather in this musician’s hat. Her most notable and recent achievement is the Grammy nomination of her song “Every Day” as performed by Rascal Flatts. Overall, her success as an artist as well as a songwriter establishes Moreno as one of the most important rising musicians in her genre today. Check her out on OurStage and jump on her bandwagon!
