Folkin' Around: Matthew Mayfield

Music conveys emotion. This isn’t a mystery to anyone who has put on their favorite song after a bad day. The power of a song or a melody to provoke feeling is something that Matthew Mayfield is very familiar with. The catch is that he does it with his voice and often subtle arrangements. From narratives with a singer/songwriter style (like his song “Dead to You” ) to powerful ballads (like the track “Open Road”), Mayfield boasts an extensive catalog. His song “Element” opens with a delicate guitar bed that supports the song’s initial theme of longing. As the song unfolds, it’s clear that Mayfield has the powerful ability to create full arrangements and sing with a depth that almost creates bell tones with his voice.
So far in 2010, Mayfield’s released a new EP almost every month. His ambition is no surprise considering he’s shared the stage with the likes of Switchfoot, Pete Yorn, The Fray and My Morning Jacket. ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy featured his song “First In Line” on their 100th episode as well as “Better” earlier this year.
Mayfield played at this year’s Wakarusa Festival in Arkansas where he performed alongside The Disco Biscuits, Blues Traveler and John Butler Trio.
