Most people use YouTube simply to watch videos that they hear about, or to listen to music that they want to stream instantly. They probably just synched their Gmail to YouTube in order to create an account. What a lot of people don’t know, however, is that YouTube is a social network. Similar to Facebook and Twitter, you can friend other users, and share information with them but the content is centered around video. What better place to market yourself as an artist who produces audio and visual content. Here are some tips to think about when reconsidering YouTube as a site to share your music.

Set up your profile “ Make the account your own. YouTube offers a decent level of customization, so why not take advantage of it. Set up a custom background and modify the colors to fit your band’s image.

Friending “ Because YouTube is a social network, you have the ability to friend other YouTube users. Use this function to connect yourself with important people within your industry or genre. If you have fans who comment on your video, why not friend them on YouTube to be able to connect with them on a deeper level.

Subscribe and Engage “ There are tons of artists on YouTube with the same goals as yours, to expose their music to the masses. Find artists with a similar style and connect with them. Subscribe to their channel and leave them a comment. There is a good chance they will do the same. Maybe they’ll like your music enough they’ll want to post a message about your band to their fans base and subscribe to your channel. We’ve seen this all happen before, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility.
