Lauren Light took a studious approach to her music career, getting a Master’s certificate in Business/Songwriting from Berklee College of Music online while working for a music booking agency. If anything, Light’s background explains the polish in her songwriting. The North Carolinian has a mainstream pop sensibility, on full display in Stay With Me. Chugging guitars and layered harmonies break into an airborne chorus. Instant gratification is great, but sometimes a slow burn leaves a greater impression. Like on the fitful Get Me Out, where Light channels Fiona Apple for a somber piano waltz. Then there’s the frenzied pop catharsis of Out Of The Pictures, a song that’s perfect for an MTV drama. Light is just beginning her career, but the future is already looking bright.
