Sony Claims Whitney Houston Price Hike on iTunes Was A Mistake
posted in: Music News
Following Whitney Houston’s untimely passing last Saturday, there was bound to be a surge in posthumous record sales for the singer, but a hike in prices on some of Whitney’s albums surprised U.K. users of the iTunes music store.
Houston’s compilation album The Ultimate Collection jumped from $7.85 to $12.50, a 60 percent increase. Another compilation album The Greatest Hits was raised from $12.50 to $15.67, a 25 percent price hike. Following understandable backlash from users claiming that Sony was trying to capitalize on the loss of a human life, an official apology was made Tuesday morning.
Whitney Houston product was mistakenly mispriced on the U.K. iTunes store on Sunday, a statement issued by Sony reads. When discovered, the mistake was immediately corrected. We apologize for any offense caused.
The albums were returned to their original price Sunday evening after Sony realized their mistake. Maybe a more appropriate apology would be a refund of the difference in price to all users who bought the album at the increased cost. We’re just surprised they didn’t blame it on an intern. Nice work, Sony.
