One Half Of Tim & Eric Managed To Out-Dylan Bob Dylan With "Bob Dylan's Titanic"

Is the music world big enough for two 10 minute+ long Dylan-esque songs about the Titanic?

Bob Dylan probably didn’t realize that he was throwing down the gauntlet when he let it slip that the title track off of his upcoming album Tempest was to be an epic 14 minute long murder ballad about the infamous maiden voyage of the Titanic. But Tim Heidecker wasn’t going to let that call to action go unanswered.

Heidecker, the blonder half of absurdist comedy duo Tim & Eric, has myriad creative interests outside of his day job. He has his own podcast with comedian Gregg Turkington (aka Tim & Eric alum Neil Hamburger). He has a burgeoning independent film career. He’s helped direct a couple of Old Spice commercials. And he’s also a musician. That said, very few were prepared when Heidecker announced that he was to put out a solo release, Titanic and Other Songs, which is set to feature a 15 minute long murder ballad about the Titanic. The song is called “Bob Dylan’s Titanic.” Sound familiar?

Wanting to “see if I could beat the master to it,” Heidecker managed to get his Titanic murder ballad out before Dylan did. Going far beyond Dylan’s “Tempest” in scope – Dylan just covers the sinking, Heidecker covers the Titanic’s history through to the 1996 movie of the same name – it really is something to behold.

Now, there’s a good chance you might not like this. Tim & Eric’s brand of humor is definitely of the love it or hate it variety. If you’re a fan of their work, then there’s a good chance that this PowerPoint-esque video could be the highlight of your week.

Titanic and Other Songs comes out on vinyl on September 10th, a day before Dylan’s Tempest is scheduled to be released.
