Mixtape Mondays: Ace Hood

posted in: Music NewsUrban

Hello, hip hop heads! Another week has passed and once again we find ourselves with new music to discuss. As always, the music included in this posted is 100% free and we will continually strive to bring you the absolute best urban music has to offer. If you are an aspiring urban artist, submit your OS profile and most recent mixtape to jshotwell@ourstage.com with the subject Mixtape Mondays.

The last seven days have been surprisingly slow for the mixtape circuit. Even our indie friends seem to be busy working on new material, so this week we only have one album to discuss. That said, it’s a doozy.

Ace Hood has been one of hip hop’s best kept secrets for years. His name is on the tongue of every genre fan, but anyone getting their urban music from mainstream sources is likely to have overlooked his gifts. Unlike many of his peers, Ace makes it a point to balance heartfelt sincerity with anthemic jams. He writes about the struggles of the working class and their uphill battle against a controlling government who cares little about their quality of life just as much, if not more than he discusses the good life he’s able to live as a result of music. On Starvation 2 Ace again takes this route with his music, only now with an even more focused emphasis on real life issues. The beats may sound radio-ready, but there are a lot of great points being made as well, and that concoction of talent culminates in a release that listeners will have on repeat for months.

If there were more than one new release this week, I would tell you Starvation 2 is the must-have pick. Since it’s the only choice, you really have no reason to not give it at least an hour of your time. Click here to stream and download Starvation 2.
