9 Records We Can't Wait to Hear in 2014

posted in: FeaturesMusic News

Jack-White-PR-2010Jack White effectively effed up a whole bunch of “most anticipated in 2014” lists when, in a chat with fans this weekend, he casually announced that he’s almost finished recording a new album. This is why it pays to procrastinate, people — get those lists in late! Since we here at OurStage are huge fans of waiting until the last possible minute to get stuff done, we’d like to take this opportunity to tell you that we’re all anticipating the new Jack White record. So hard.

And, uh, it’s probably time that we tell you about some of the other albums slated for release this year that have us really excited. You can only put these things off for so long. Without further ado, here are 10 more records we’re super pumped to get our ears on in 2014.

1. Against Me!
When Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace, formerly known as Tom Gabel, announced her transition back in 2012, some fans wondered if a female-fronted iteration of the band would have the same intensity and infectiousness as its predecessor. The answer: Yes, of course. Last year’s acoustic True Trans EP was beautiful, and if the first few singles from the upcoming Transgender Dysphoria Blues are any indication, that record will absolutely rip as well.

2. La Dispute
urlLa Dispute must have been trying to give their fans the best early Christmas present ever, because on December 16th the band announced a new record, Rooms of the House, as well as a spring tour with Pianos Become the Teeth and Mansions. The guys are also moving to a new label, Better Living, and are trying their hand in the multimedia game; the new album comes with a 48-page companion book called Yesterday’s Home. Way to keep everyone on their toes.

3. Wilco
Jeff Tweedy says that this one is gonna sound “more fucked up,” and that’s all we needed to hear. Get pumped.

3. Johnny Cash
I’ll be honest, when I first saw that new Johnny Cash material was headed for shelves this year, there was a five second span of time when I thought his passing in 2003 might have been just a bad dream. Alas, it wasn’t. But with Out Among the Stars, a collection of previously unreleased songs that Cash recorded in the ’80s, we might just feel like he’s still here with us.

4. Frank Ocean
Let’s be real: Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange is probably the smoothest, grooviest, and most interesting R&B album to come out in the last decade. His sophomore effort, which is slated for this release summer, is said to be inspired by The Beatles and boasts collaborations with Pharell and maaaaybe Depeche Mode. If it’s even half as soulful and original as his debut, it’ll be a contender for album of the year.

url-15. Fleet Foxes
There’s been some speculation that these Seattle natives were thinking about calling it a day, and it didn’t help that drummer J. Tillman parted ways with the band to focus on his side project, Father John Misty. But then, this Facebook update happened. (Thanks, Internet!) Don’t act like you’re not excited; anyone who says that Fleet Foxes’ bluesy, spacey folk doesn’t touch their heart is a. lying or b. soulless.

7. Wu-Tang Clan
Sure, the new Wu-Tang effort was initially supposed to drop in 2013, and yes, the thing still doesn’t have an official release date. But the remaining Wu members just took to Facebook (again, thanks Internet!) to promise that the record is “coming soon.” So, 50/50 chance that this sees the light of day in 2014.

9. Modest Mouse
Seven years. SEVEN YEARS we have been waiting for a new full-length from Modest Mouse, and finally our patience is being rewarded. The band cancelled an entire UK tour to work on the upcoming release, and as a little bonus Nirvana‘s Krist Novoselic is playing on this one, so it should be near-perfect. Awww yiss.

10. Lindsay Lohan
Yeah, we said it. Actress/singer/professional trainwreck LiLo is getting back into the music game this lindsay-lohan-is-more-talented-than-marilyn-monroe-says-hollywood-directoryear, stepping into the studio for the first time since 2005’s A Little More Personal (Raw). Interestingly enough, she’s rumored to be working with The Kills guitarist Jamie Hills in an effort to grunge up her image. (Was anyone accusing Lohan of not being grungy?) The forthcoming record could be amazing or it could be amazingly bad – either way, we can’t wait to hear it.
