Poptarts: Katie Cole

Pop/Acoustic/Rock. Let’s break down this genre combination. First, you need someone rooted in a rock tradition. Perhaps someone who grew up with their parents listening to the likes of Led Zeppelin or The Rolling Stones. Next, hand this person an acoustic guitar. Perhaps they already know how to play and even show up at local venues to cover Sheryl Crow and Janis Joplin with nothing more than their voice and an acoustic guitar. On top of all this, throw in the ability to write insanely catchy songs with honest lyrics delivered with a full, powerful voice.

You may not know this but I’ve just given you Katie Cole‘s bio. This Australian-born singer/songwriter grew up in Melbourne learning guitar, performance and songwriting one gig at a time. These humble acoustic/rock beginnings eventually morphed into full fledged pop songs with contagious melodies and relentless energy that undoubtedly stem from her early appreciation of rock.

After developing her sound, Cole was approached by esteemed producer Howard Willing (OK Go and Stevie Nicks among others) after he stumbled on her demo’s online. She took a risk and  traveled overseas to LA, paying for her own airfare and hotel.  Not long into the recording process, Cole knew she needed to finish her album with Willing.

Since this first break, Cole has played numerous shows throughout the US in markets including LA, Nashville and New York City. She’s since shared the stage with countless regional acts as well as iconic country artist Glen Campbell. Be sure to catch her on stage this summer during one of her west coast shows and listen to her right here.
