GuacaMusic: A Blend of Styles

posted in: FeaturesLatinReviews & Playlists

There are a lot of misconceptions about Latin music. No, Latin isn’t exclusively about salsa and tropical rhythms. It is not just music with lyrics in Spanish. There is more to it than Ricky Martin or Shakira.

Just like a Guacamole dish, Latin music uses a variety of ingredients. From cumbia to reggaeton and bachata, Latinos use different styles to communicate love, passion and even political ideas. This is why we created GuacaMusic, a space to discuss the various flavors of this eclectic dish called música latina, a spicy yet sweet combination of sabores from the most random places in Latin America. In this blog, we will explore the meaning of rancheras and the relevance of salsa. We will talk about some of the most commonly used words in Spanish language songs. We will even give you a few tips on how to dance reggaeton like a pro.

The mixture of flavors that make the música latina so provocative is flawlessly represented by a soaring number of artists on OurStage. Take Carolina by Caguama for example, a rich mix of cumbia, ranchera and rock; or the very different Inmigrante by Ben Conga, a politically-themed song about the struggles faced by undocumented immigrants in the US. Other great examples include the Flamenco-inspired Paralamera by Six Strings and a Piece of Wood and the Cuban flavored “For You” by Sugarcane Rush. And who can resist the catchy sounds in La Cuerda by Mint and the Mentals?

Latin lovers will fall in love with this playlist. Welcome to GuacaMusic!

¡Provecho!
