Five Reasons Why We All Love Salsa

posted in: FeaturesLatin

What is it about salsa music that we all love so much? Why is it that Latinos and non-Latinos alike find the genre so irresistible?

Go to our Latin Channel, play a bunch of salsa songs and you may quickly find the answers. As self-declared salsa lovers, we have created a list of reasons why almost anyone falls in love with salsa after the first encounter:

  1. There is something about salsa that makes you feel like you are vacationing on a foreign country. Are you in Cuba? Puerto Rico? Miami? No one really knows who invented salsa, and once you are listening to it you won’t really care. With its combination of Latin and Afro-Caribbean rhythms, most songs will transport you to a sunny beach or resort fiesta. Check out “A Tiempo Salsa” by yarimore and start getting into vacay mode.
  2. Salsa cheers you up, especially if you don’t understand the lyrics. Most people listen to salsa to lift their spirits, but did you know that the majority of the songs are about relationship problems?  Who cares what you are singing if the music makes you feel as happy as a clam? Play some salsa on OurStage and rejoice!
  3. Dancing salsa makes people look more attractive. We are not sure if it is the sweat, the steps, or the music in Spanish that make salsa dancers so appealing to watch. Maybe it’s the couple aspect of it, the fact that they rely so much on another person. Or, perhaps it is all about seeing people get out of their comfort zones.
  4. Dancing salsa is liberating. Have you ever hit the gym after a stressful day? Didn’t that feel therapeutic? You should know that salsa is a complete workout, one that incorporates cardio and muscle toning. But most importantly, salsa is fun, cathartic and good for the soul!
  5. Salsa makes you part of a community. Salsa is universal. Once you learn the steps, you can dance anywhere. You could be in a Latin music festival, a fancy club downtown or a house party in Latin America and you will know what to do as soon as you hear the first beats of any salsa song. Put your left foot forward and rock back onto your right foot, and you will promptly join those beside you in this amazing fiesta that is salsa dancing.
