The Beat Generation: DVAS

Don’t let their name fool you. I mean, the name DVAS is pretty loaded. One would think these guys might be a bunch of primadonnas: curt, demanding and spoiled. However, Toronto’s DVAS (pronounced either D-V-A-S or divas) embody the more positive connotations of their namesake. They emphasize the stylishness, the confidence. It’s certainly a better fit than their old moniker, Dietzche V. and the Abominable Snowman”a name that doesn’t roll off the tongue very easily.

DVAS claim Daft Punk and Junior Boys as influences and one can hear Passion Pit and Chromeo as obvious touchstones. Society, the title track off their album which was released this past November, is a fine slice of 80’s influenced electro. Percolating synth meshes with the falsetto vocals and a pop bass line adds color to the mix. The track is so sleek that it makes up the backbone of a Hood Internet remix of the song featuring Chicago-based rapper Kid Static. Off the strength of “Society”, the band has managed to get their video for the song debuted on Spinner and MuchMusic, and earned a Single of the Week on iTunes upon the track’s release.
