Superlatones: The Flower Child

posted in: FeaturesPopRock

Lately, it seems that we are hearing more and more from new and unexpected partnerships between artists of different genres. This is why, through Superlatones, we are creating our very own directory”a musical wish-list, if you will”of artists who have yet to join the collaborative bandwagon.

From hippie to grunge to today’s infamous hipster, subcultures are an inevitable part of modern society. While some of them fade or evolve into new subcultures, the influences these movements have on people are certainly still evident. In fact, they never truly go away. That’s why this week we are celebrating the hidden remnant’s of hippie culture, with two artists that would have fit right into the 1960s.

The Dynamic Duo:
Cloud Control
and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

Cloud Control is a psychedelic rock band from New South Wales, Australia. Although they have yet to blow up in America, the group has gained much success in their home country, winning the Australian Music Prize in 2011 as well as Record of the Year and Best Live Musical Act from the Sydney Music, Arts and Culture Awards. Their debut album Bliss Release has been described as a blend of organic folk, colorful synths and indie rock influences.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are best know for their song “Home,” which received much media attention in 2009. The song came under the album Up From Below, which was then followed by the release of the full-length musical SALVO! featuring songs from the debut record. Front man Alexander Ebert says he created the concept of Edward Sharpe as a character for a novel, but instead created the band which included Jade Castrinos, Aaron Embry and actress Nora Kirkpatrick, amongst others.

With Cloud Control’s psychedelic undertones and Edward Sharpe’s natural, “community music” feel, these bands would be the perfect poster boys and girls of today’s surviving hippie movement. We can even picture them fitting right into the days of Woodstock. For now, we’ll just have to hope that they will someday come together, sharing good vibes with all their fans across the globe.
