The Editorialist: 5 Songs To Keep You Sane This Thanksgiving

posted in: FeaturesPopRock

Thanksgiving is a time for oven-baked turkey, slow cooked vegetables, massive amounts of pie, and of course, family chaos. The holidays simply aren’t complete without a bit of craziness in the family kitchen. That’s why this year, we’re ditching the traditional Thanksgiving songs, and bringing you a platter filled with a few random, strung together songs, all representing what Thanksgiving means to us. It’s a little random, a little crazy, and a lot like the holidays.

So between the first forkful of green beans and stuffing, to the last spoonful of ice cream and pie, take a moment to yourself to breathe, plug in the ipod, and remember a few songs that make up the holidays, by enjoying this random mash up of tracks.

Arlo Guthrie: Alice’s Restaurant

Let’s just start this article off right, with Arlo Guthrie‘s Alice’s Restaurant, the ultimate Thanksgiving song. Having just recently discovered this little gem, I felt compelled to share with you all, the world who has been missing out. Now I know, I know, it’s from 1967, so you youngins are thinking about brushing it off. But trust me-it’s a winner. It’s 18 minutes of pure hilarity, based off a true story. Plus, isn’t it still cool to know the songs that no one else knows? That’s right hipsters, this one’s for you.

R. Kelly: Trapped In The Closet

To me, R. Kelly is nothing short of a genius for the success he’s had with his Trapped In The Closet saga. It’s a guilty pleasure, sure, but beginning Thanksgiving Day, the entire series will air on IFC. If you can get that on TV for all to see and love, then you’re doing something right. Airing later that night, we’ll see the return of Trapped In The Closet, with a brand new chapter. That’s why we had to bring you Chapter 1 as part of Turkey Day recognition.

Adam Sandler: “The Thanksgiving Song”

When your family is as crazy as mine around the holidays, you could use a little comic relief. That’s why Adam Sandler’s The Thanksgiving Song, is such a hit.

Gary Glitter: “Rock and Roll Part 2”

You may not know who the man behind this staple sports anthem is but that song that has you tapping your foot and screaming hey! every 2 seconds is none other than Gary Glitter, with Rock and Roll Part 2. In honor of Thanksgiving Day football games,  we’re giving you a little glitter action to fist pump and scream along to.

John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John: Greased Lighting

Last but not least, a piece for nostalgia value. For me, Thanksgiving was never complete without the presence of Grease on the TV. I’m not sure if anyone else has noticed, but whenever Thanksgiving Day rolls around, so does Grease’s appearance on the TV, and in perfect conjunction with that lag between dinner and dessert, I might add. So while our parents sunk into a food coma, and we awaited the next bite, you could find my cousin and I dancing along to Greased Lightning in the living room. Here’s to you, Grease.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.
