DOWNLOAD OF THE WEEK: HOT BITCH ARSENAL

Whoever thought trip-hop was dead probably never got around to listening to a New York duo by the name of Hot Bitch Arsenal. “Double Down Quick (Nebulae’s Sunset Mix)” is a slick, soulful tune with shimmery guitars and drum machine sequencers that could easily be a contender for a James Bond movie theme song. The track was the top of the Club/Dance channel for the month of May and is slowly creeping into my personal list of most played tracks. With sultry vocals that would rival Portishead’s Beth Gibbons and The Cardigans’ Nina Persson, Hot Bitch Arsenal singer Christina Abbot delivers a compelling, breathy performance. Free loaders and budding DJ’s rejoice – as supporters of Creative Commons, the duo has made a selection of their tracks available for download in Ableton live format for potential remixes on their official website. In the meantime, enjoy this one of “Double Down Quick” by Nebulae – a Dallas lawyer by day/producer by night.

  • Remix culture is as alive as ever in this day and age. Today we have three versions of the Always There by songstress, Caitlyn Hessell.

    1. The original, a haunting tune for voice and guitar, with emotive strings playing over the top to round out the sound.

    2. The trip-hop version remixed by UK based, Proof Of Concept. With a heavy breakbeat featuring white noise hits, pizzicato strings, and beefed-up bass line, Always There takes on a decidedly more urban feel.

    3. While technically not a remix because I believe vocals have been re-recorded with a slightly modified melody, the result is the same. This version, a collaboration with Manic (probably NYC’s DJ Manic), is yet another beautiful re-imagination of the original song

  • Stream Bob Dylan’s latest album on NPR.
  • If you are in Boston or can get to Boston come to these shows. They are going to be MIND BLOWING.

Want to listen to GREAT music, chosen especially for you? Check out the music recommendation player on your front page. Here are the Top 3 songs, picked just for me:

  • 2. James Mason, who knows the value of a good album cover (seriously its killer…), brings us a delicate finger picked ballad in Laura’s Stones
  • 3. Front Row for the Meltdown. Long band name, tight sound. Describing their sound as “Post Pop for the Pre Apocalypse”, the third track on my Recommendation Player was the upbeat, Let’s Drive.
  • Radiohead is at it again.  With the overwhelming success of the Nude Remix, they have decided to do the same with Reckoner(!!!). Full details here.
