Metal Monday: One Sentence Reviews

The art of conciseness is something many people do not practice. Since February is the shortest month of the year, I’ll keep things brief and to the point. This ode to conciseness post features one-sentence album reviews for new metal releases over the last few months. Which bands have stepped up their game with their latest releases? Which bands have taken a turn for the worst? Read on to find out.

Throwdown – Deathless, released January 8

Sounds like your average Throwdown album, but like they hired Sully Erna (of Godsmack) as their new vocalist. [overall 7/10]

Mudvayne – Mudvayne, released December 18

A very mediocre attempt at crawling back from the atrocities that were Lost and Found and The New Game. [overall 5/10]

Swallow the Sun – New Moon, released November 4

With an unfortunate title, New Moon has further solidified Swallow the Sun as the premier Death/Doom metal band. [overall 9/10]

Overkill – Ironbound, released January 29

By far Overkill’s best album in many years, on par with the band’s glory days. [overall 9/10]

Annotations of an Autopsy – The Reign of Darkness, released January 18

An album that shows a lot of promise for the deathcore genre, but still is missing a few components of a great album (brutality not one of them). [overall 7/10]

Gamma Ray – To The Metal!, released January 29

A somewhat weak and watered-down power metal album from one of the genre’s best ” a decent release for those unfamiliar with great power metal. [overall 6/10]

Fear Factory – Mechanize, released February 9

Fear Factory is a band that rarely disappoints, and gives you the same style of music on each album ” Mechanize being the best of the lot since Obsolete. [overall 9/10]

The last few months in the metal world have been a bit lackluster, but it is still early in 2010 ” there’s a lot more metal to come.
