Mike del Rio
Comparing one musician to another is an act fraught with danger. At one end there is offense, at the other there is hype. That said, two words leap to mind when listening to Mike del Rio: Pete Yorn. Both are multi-instrumentalists and purveyors of glimmering rock. Listen to del Rio’s The New Year and all of a sudden it’s 2004 and Music for the Morning After is on the stereo. This is not to say del Rio is dated or a mere carbon copy. The Brooklyn singer-songwriter has an emotive falsetto that Yorn could only dream of, and his epic rock songs are tinged with electronic textures that didn’t even exist 6 years ago. With its shuddering synths and windblown soundscapes, The New Year glistens and soars in a way that resonates uniquely with audiences of 2010.
