Scene & Heard: Nashville, TN

Country music, songwriting, the Grand Ole Opry. I am, of course, listing the quintessential components of the musical environment of Nashville, TN. You’ve probably heard about the great names to come out the scene or the renowned venues they’ve graced with their presence, but I’m here to take you on a guided tour of local Nashville: the vibrant scene that supports some of the most talented regional acts in the country.
Nashville is home to some awesome rock venues including Mercy Lounge and The Stage on Broadway. Mercy Lounge hosts weekly local blues, rock and singer/songwriter shows. The attached Cannery Ballroom can also be booked for functions and weddings and even hosted acts like Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings and As I Lay Dying this month alone. Mercy Lounge is also the host of BMI’s “8 off 8th Showcase” which features Nashville indie rock bands every week. The Stage on Broadway refers to itself as a “rockin’ country club” and hosts Nashville talent every night of the week with artists, often playing weekly residencies, performing throughout the day.
Beyond Nashville’s extensive rock venues, the city contains many smaller cafes more suited to a folk-oriented set. If you’re interested in seeing local Nashville talent, you should check out The Bluebird Cafe. This venue made itself famous for hosting weekly songwriters’ showcases and series (including some backed by AFTRA). The venue even requires the artists auditioning for many of its shows to be  Nashville-based acts.

I can’t talk about Nashville, however, without mentioning the recent floods that caused many local businesses to temporarily shut their doors in order to make repairs. The Bluebird had to close for two days earlier this month due to damages. Needless to say, it’s been tough for many clubs and local businesses. However, the locals are banding together to try and patch things up. Charitable foundations such as Support Nashville have started campaigns to raise money and awareness about the situation. The foundation even organized a music compilation album made up of Nashville artists back in May. Proceeds will go toward supporting small business owners and club operators in the Nashville area that have been affected by the flood. After speaking with representatives from the organization, it’s clear that they have a lot of faith in the these artists to not only make a great local album, but also to impress a more national audience. Head over to their Web site and share your support.
Even with all this going on, Music City is still going strong with talented artists and great venues. OurStagers Amy Stroup and Shelly Fraley both fit the “Nashville singer/songwriter” bill with impressive touring résumés and high-profile licensing deals (One Tree Hill, Life Unexpected and Private Practice). One of the winners for the Bon Jovi Wanted: A Super Band competition, The Worsties, call Nashville their home as well. Needless to say, the city continues to support the stereotype of great songwriting and awesome up-and-coming artists. Check out these great Nashville artists from OurStage and catch a show if you’re in town.
