Death Grips, Epic Records Part Ways

Parting is such sweet sorrow. Except when it isn’t.

Epic Records is seeking to divest themselves of Death Grips, the noise-rap trio that the major label famously signed back in February.

In a statement released to Pitchfork, Epic Records stated that they were in the process of, “working to dissolve our relationship with Death Grips. We wish them well.”

Like hell they do. Though to be fair, Epic has every reason to be upset.

News of Epic’s dropping of Death Grips comes a day after the group posted screenshots of emails to their Facebook page that appear to show correspondence between the band’s manager Peter Katsis and various Epic higher ups.

“Epic is extremely upset and disappointed that the artist decided to release an album without Epic’s knowledge or involvement,” says Heath Kudler, Epic’s Senior VP of Business and Legal in the leaked email in reference to Death Grips’ decision to release their most recent LP NO LOVE DEEP WEB for free over the web without informing Epic prior. The label also demanded that the band relinquish their masters to the label to prepare for a full commercial release.

The screenshots of the emails were accompanied with a message from the band, “HAHAHAHAHAHAHA NOW FUCK OFF.” A number of news outlets (us included) had initially treated news of Death Grips’ much publicized album leak as a publicity stunt. Apparently that’s not the case.

It’s always sad when break ups are messy like this. Splitting up their assets is going to be really rough! Is MC Ride going to have to give half of his beard in the settlement? And what about the kids!

Dry your tears and check out NO LOVE DEEP WEB in full below whilst marveling at the fact that Death Grips was ever signed to a major label in the first place.
