The Queen’s Men

If you’re gonna be a drummer in a rock band, having the name Josh Pow can work to your advantage. Pow, along with bassist Anthony Channer, guitarist Artur Alexjeves and singer Nelda Kuzuma makes up London’s über heavy rock band, Krona. Swedish for crown, the name implies a certain power and influence. Think of the band as slightly Rasputin in their execution. There’s a subversion to their songcraft that’s as sinister as it is shrewd. Macho is a maelstrom of thrashing drums, blasts of guttural guitars and a vocoder that sounds like Satan gargling. Before I Disappear is sexier terrain, with Kuzuma’s layered coos leading you into certain trouble. On We Are Not Robots her voice is treacle to the barbed call and response of guitars. Whether they’re skittering into trip hop or lumbering through a quagmire of sludge, Krona wield an awesome power over their listeners. They rule.
