Spotify Reveals The UK's Songs Of The Summer

Spotify just put out a playlist the top 10 most streamed tracks – on their service, anyways – in the UK from this summer. Ok, so it’s not quite America’s Songs of The Summer or The World’s Songs of The Summer. But keep in mind that our friends across the pond have pretty good taste.
The list itself is interesting purely as a piece of sociomusicology study. Sure, there are the obvious toppers like the undeniable “We Are Young” by fun. featuring Janelle Monáe (which has probably gotten a bit played out by this point in the season) to “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen and “Whistle” by Flo Rida.
But then there are the more anglo selections. That’s where things get interesting.
Has any Coldplay song gotten heavy rotation here in the states for the past few months. “Princess of China” (featuring Rihanna) sure has in the UK, and it appears here at #8. Then there’s that song from the Internet Explorer commercial, Alex Clare’s “Too Close,” that made it in at #7. And Rita Ora, young upstart star in the making and friend of Jay-Z and Beyonce, managed to slip in at #9 above David Guetta’s “Titanium” featuring Sia. Finally, the most alien entry to American listeners is probably the best track on the list at #6 – Rudimental’s “Feel The Love” featuring John Newman. Seriously, who knew that pop drum & bass could be this good? The saxophone solo doesn’t hurt either.
A tip of the hat to Hypetrak for cluing us in to this. Listen to the playlist here.
Happy friday, everyone.
